Awdycki Enters Cape Cod League Hall Of Fame

AMHERST, Mass. - Former UMass baseball standout John Awdycki was one of 10 individuals inducted into Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame as a part of the Class of 2009 this past weekend at a ceremony in Chatham, Mass. The first-baseman/outfielder, who lettered for the Redmen in 1962, '63 and '64, played and coached for Orleans of the CCBL.
Awdycki won the CCBL batting title in 1965 with a .407 average and totaled 44 hits, 28 RBI and 22 runs scored. His batting average from that season is still the fourth best wooden bat mark in league history. He later coached for Orleans from 1968-75 and served as general manager in his final season with the team.
In his career at UMass, Awdycki was an All-New England and All-Yankee Conference honoree in both 1963 and '64. A team captain, Awdycki led the Redmen to a 32-22-1 overall record in his three varsity seasons and was named Team MVP after hitting .303 as a first baseman-outfielder in 1964.
Awdycki went on to play semi-pro ball in the Quebec Provincial League for Thetford Mines in 1966, where his manager was fellow 2009 CCBL Hall of Fame inductee Lou Lamoriello. The first baseman was one of the top hitters in the league, batting .320 and helping the Mines to a playoff berth.
Awdycki is the sixth individual from UMass to enter the Cape Cod League Hall of Fame, joining executives Dick Bresciani (in 2000) and Mike Curran (2005), LHP Mike Flanagan (2000), RHP Jeff Reardon (2000) and 1B-OF Bob Hansen (2008).
