Rowing Set For Head Of The Charles This Weekend

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's rowing team will travel to Boston this weekend to compete in the prestigious Head of the Charles. The Minutewomen have entered boats in the lightweight 8+, openweight 8+, and Julia Richter in the single. In addition, head coach Jim Dietz will be racing in his single and assistant coach Laura Simon will be coxing the Alumni 8+ on the Charles River.
The Head of the Charles Regatta is the world's largest two-day rowing event, beginning in 1965. Today, more than 7,500 athletes from around the world compete in 55 different race events. The Regatta grew to a two-day event in 1997 and now attracts up to 300,000 spectators during the October weekend.
Richter's single race is expected to be the highlight of the weekend. With the weather promising to be less than favorable, the waters may be rough on the river this weekend. Below is the lineup for the 8+ boats:
Lightweight 8+:
Carly Payne (cox), Liz Euiler, Chelsea Wakeham, Emily Boucher, Ana Tocco, Megan Donovan, Ali Donzanti, Amy Nash and Tory Gordon.
Openweight 8+: Samantha Schnoerr (cox), Samantha Smith, Kelsey Schachter, Ali DiMatteo, Amanda Doolin, Kailyn Allocco, Meredith Kearney, Megan Rodgers and Rachel Spielberg.
In last weekend's Head of the Housatonic, Richter finished third in the single's race with a time of 20:33.983 while Smith placed fifth (22:09.628). The two UMass boats entered in the women's pair came in first and second, with Doolin and DiMatteo (20:12.495) and Teresa O'Brien and Katherine Kern (20:21.425).
The Minutewomen had three boats in the women's fours with UMass finishing sixth, seventh and tenth. Payne, Jen Coyne, Schachter, Izzy Donadio and Rodgers finished with a time of 18:45.486, just above the other two Massachusetts entries.
In the women's lightweight singles, the Minutewomen swept the top four finishes, with Boucher placing first with a time of 20:27.428, ahead of Euiler, Gordon and Wakeham. The women's doubles, raced by Ellis Brewster and Jen Dolan finished fourth with a time of 24:48.226.
In the women's eight, UMass finished seventh, eighth and tenth while the women's quad finished second and third in their race.
