Seven Minutemen Qualify For IC4A Championships At Terrier Invitational

Boston, Mass. - The UMass men's track and field team competed at the Terrier Invitational Saturday against teams from across the nation. Although there was no team score, the Minutemen turned out many promising performances. The top showing of the day came from junior Brian Miller (Foxboro, Mass.). Miller high jumped 6-feet, 4.25 inches for a second place finish overall. Junior Tyler Cotto (Holliston, Mass.) qualified for IC4A Championships with a time of 7.74 in the 55 meter hurdles.
Also running in the 55 meter hurdles was freshman Zach Koncki (Northampton, Mass.) with a time of 8.24 for a 16th place finish. Qualifying for IC4A competition, the distance medley relay team ranked fifth overall of 13 teams with a time of 10:15.39. The squad consisted of junior Sean Duncan (Gardener, Mass.), sophomore Dan Schwatz (Sudbury, Mass.), senior Pete Fortunato (Tewksbury, Mass.) and junior Andrew McCann (Fayetteville, N.Y.). Another top-ten performance came from junior Sam Laorenza (North Andover, Mass.) who ranked sixth in the 500 meter dash with a time of 1:04.41 and qualified for the IC4A Championships.
In the field events, sophomore Sean Busch (Stow, Mass.) vaulted a mark of 14-03.25 to tie for ninth overall. Freshman Daniel Wu (Tenafly, N.J.) ranked 11th in the triple jump with a distance of 41-10.50 and 18th in the long jump (20-07.75).
Distance runners faced the greatest number of competitors at the Terrier Invitational. In the 3000 meter, junior Jonathan Pierce (Hanover, Mass.) ranked 19th of 101 runners with a time of 8:25.08 to qualify for IC4A competition. In the 1000 meter, Duncan crossed the finish line 19th of 61 runners with a time of 2:32.57.
The Minutemen return to action Friday, Jan. 30 at the Reggie Lewis Track in Roxbury, Mass. for the Boston Games.
