Amherst, Mass. - Field hockey forward Katelyn Orlando (Manchester, Mass.) was named UMass/ Dinn. Bros. Athlete of the Week after having the best week of her career last week. Orlando tallied three goals, one game-winner, and six shots on the weekend as the Minutewomen defeated then-No.18 Albany 2-1, and just fell to No.2 Syracuse 5-4, bringing them to a 2-1 record on the week, and 7-3 overall.
Orlando scored on her only shot of the day as she knocked in the game-winner against a fierce Albany team putting the Minutewomen ahead for the final 2-1 score. With the win over Albany, the Minutewomen were prepared for the then second-ranked team in the country, Syracuse. UMass went scoreless in the first half but stepped up big in the second half with Orlando scoring the second and third goals for the Minutewomen while also leading the team with five shots on the day. Orlando improved to five goals on the season and 14 for her career.
Orlando is now tied for first on the team in both goals and game-winners as she improved her numbers to five goals and two game-winners after the weekend's play. The senior forward ranks second on the team in shots with 17 and is tied for third in points with 10 this season.
She will be honored on Wednesday at the UMass Sports Luncheon in room 1009 of the Campus Center. The Luncheon will feature various UMass head coaches as guest speakers.
