AMHERST, Mass. - A goal by Katie Semanoff early in the second half was the only scoring in a defensive battle as UMass (3-2) fell to fifth-ranked UConn (5-0), 1-0, in Friday night's field hockey game at rainy Garber Field. After the teams battled to a scoreless tie at the half, the Huskies earned six penalty corners in the first three minutes of the second half before Semanoff scored off one of them three and a half minutes into the period.
Freshman Alesha Widdall made three saves in goal for the Minutewomen, while Andrea Mainiero stopped two or the Huskies. UConn's Lauren Aird led all players with five shots, while sophomore Jackie Tait paced UMass with two.
Play was fairly even throughout the first half as neither side could gain an advantage. Both teams won three penalty corners each in the first 35 minutes, but couldn't convert.
UMass had the best opportunity of the opening half when it won a corner with just over 10 minutes to go. After inserting on the corner, Erin Parker went to the left post and tried to tip in a pass that came across the goal, but her shot just missed high.
UConn applied pressure from the outset of the second half, winning six corners in a row before Aird found Semanoff open on the left post for the games only goal in the 39th minute.
For the game, the Huskies outshot the Minutewomen, 11-5, while outcornering them, 11-4.
UMass returns to action on Sunday, when they host the second game of a stretch that sees the Minutewomen play seven out of eight games at home. Harvard will come to Garber Field for a noon start.
