AMHERST, Mass. - Three separate players scored as UMass field hockey (1-1) displayed a diversified offense to go along with a tough defense in the Minutewomen's 3-0 victory over Quinnipiac (0-1) on Sunday afternoon at newly renovated Garber Field. Jill Powers, Katelyn Orlando, and Cher King all scored in what was the first game played at Garber since all new seating was installed over the summer.

The play was fairly even in the early minutes of the game, but Powers, who scored UMass' first goal of the season in Friday's 3-2 loss to Boston College in the season-opener, started the scoring again on this day. The junior transfer from Rhode Island made a terrific play to tip in a long pass from Jaime Bourazeris to put UMass on top, 1-0, at the 20:20 mark of the first half.

The Minutewomen would take that 1-0 lead into halftime as they controlled play for the rest of the half, outshooting the Bobcats, 8-4, and out-cornering them, 5-1.

In the second half Bourazeris set up another goal, this time off a penalty corner. The sophomore back took a pass just left of center at the top of the circle and fired a pass to Orlando, who tipped the ball high into the goal out of the reach of Quinnipiac goalkeeper Jenna Grossman, making it 2-0 Minutewomen in the 41st minute. It was Orlando's 10th career goal and Bourazeris' first multi-assist game of her career.

Last season's leading scorer, King, got in on the act just minutes later, taking a nifty pass from Powers and quickly firing a shot past Grossman for her first tally of the season, giving UMass a 3-0 lead in the 45th minute. For the junior forward it was her 16th career goal.

The Minutewomen defense stayed strong for the rest of the game, thwarting five Bobcats penalty corners to hang on for the shutout. It was freshman goalkeeper Alesha Widdall's first career win and shutout. She made her mark on the game with a spectacular diving save in the first half on shot at point blank range from Cassie Adams.

For the game, UMass outshot the Bobcats, 14-9, and held the advantage in penalty corners, 7-6.

Powers' three-point game came one day before her 21st birthday and gives her a team-leading five points for the season.

Head coach Justine Sowry's Minutewomen return to action on Friday when they take on Dartmouth on the road at 3 p.m.
