Amherst, Mass. - UMass senior rower Sarah Marsan was named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Region second team by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. The CRCA also honored Marsan, Airlina Burrill, Erin Kelly, Amanda Mawn, Karen Plevock, and Amy Rayla as National Scholar-Athletes. Rayla is a first time honoree and the other five rowers are repeat winners.
The rowers named scholar-athlete must be at least a sophomore, have competed in 75% of the races, and have at least a 3.5 grade point average.
Marsan, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, has a 3.68 GPA in Marketing. She was in the gold medal winning quad at the Atlantic 10 Championship and was in the varsity eight all season. Her selection as second team All-Mid Atlantic Region was based on a vote of region coaches.
Burrill, a junior from Eastham, Mass., has a 3.635 GPA in Kinesiology. She was in the gold medal winning quad at the Atlantic 10 Championship and was in the varsity eight all season.
Kelly, a junior from Stoughton, Mass., has a 3.751 GPA in Nursing. She rowed in the varsity eight.
Mawn, a senior from Milton, Mass., has a 3.557 GPA in History. She was a member of the second varsity eight that took the silver medal at the recent Dad Vail Regatta.
Plevock, a junior from Weymouth, Mass., has a 3.832 GPA in Biology. She was a member of the varsity four.
Rayla, a senior from Still River, Mass., has a 3.832 GPA in Biology. She rowed in the lightweight four.
Having six rowers honored as CRCA Scholar-Athletes, is UMass' second highest total ever. Last year, the Minutewomen had 14 rowers selected.
