AMHERST, Mass. - After UMass jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, the Fordham bats came to life and a late rally by the home club fell short, as the Minutemen (18-27, 11-16) fell to the Rams (29-24-1, 13-14 A-10), 13-10, to close the season on Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) drove in a season-high five runs to lead the Minutemen. UMass honored its four seniors prior to the game and all four produced during the game. Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.) (2-3, 2 R), Bryan Garrity (Peabody, Mass.) (1-5), and Andy Tuetken (Smithfield, R.I.) all collected hits, while Aaron Smith (Westfield, Mass.) pitched a scoreless inning. Fordham was led by Rich Goulian's 4-for-5, five-RBI day.
John Flanagan (4-3) got the win for the Rams, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits. Jared Freni (Malden, Mass.) (0-5) took the loss for UMass, pitching 4 1/3 innings and allowing six runs on six hits. Greg Dimmling threw the final 3 2/3 innings for Fordham to earn his second save.
UMass took an early lead 5-0 lead after two innings of play. Brian Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) (1-3, 3 R), who led off the first with a walk and stolen base, scored on an error on the Fordham first baseman. In the second, Matt Gedman (Framingham, Mass.) and Kyle Multner (Peabody, Mass.) successfully executed a first-and-third double-steal to score the Minutemen's second run. After a walk and single loaded the bases, Tempesta reached base on another error by the first baseman, with two runs scoring on the play. Jim Macdonald (Cheshire, Conn.) followed with a sacrifice fly, giving UMass a 5-0 lead.
Fordham responded by scoring two runs in each of the next four innings and then four runs in the seventh. A RBI single by Goulian drove in a run in the third. P.J. Como and Michael Taddei had back-to-back RBI in the fourth, followed by back-to-back opposite field home runs in the fifth inning by Goulian and Joe Russo. Goulian came back with a two-RBI double in the sixth and Chris Walker's single that drove in two runs was the big blow in the seventh.
UMass scored a single run in the sixth when Garrity walked with the bases loaded to score Tuetken and came back with four runs in the seventh. With two outs, two-straight errors followed by a walk loaded the bases. Franczek, after being called back to the plate after the previous pitch hit him, was again hit by a pitch to drive in a run. With the bases loaded again, Tempesta stroked a double down the right field line that drove in all three baserunners and got the Minutemen back within a run, 11-10.
Fordham got two insurance runs in the ninth. Three single to start the inning loaded the bases and led to a sacrifice fly by Goulian and an RBI single by Russo to make it 13-11.
