The UMass Minutemen will return home on Tuesday to take on the UConn Huskies. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. On Wednesday, UMass will travel to Lynn, Massachusetts to face the Harvard Crimson in the first round of the Beanpot. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Fraser Field. UMass is coming off a three game series against George Washington where the Minutemen took two out of three games.
Scouting UMass (8-11, 3-6 Atlantic 10)
UMass is coming off a three game series against A-10 rival George Washington. The Minutemen took two out of three games against the Colonials where UMass outscored George Washington 10-8.
The Minutemen are lead by sophomore Brian Baudinet who is hitting .348 and leads the team with 5 homeruns and is tied with junior Adam Tempesta with 16 RBIs. Sophomore Mike Donato leads the club with eight doubles and has knocked out two homeruns on the season.
For pitching, UMass is currently lead by freshman Nick Serino. Serino is coming off a strong outing against George Washington where he pitched 6 1/3 innings scoreless innings. Serino has a 2-1 record on the season and has a team low 2.45 ERA (6 ER / 22.0 IP). Junior Mitchell Eilenberg (1-2) has made eight appearances this season, most on the team, to post a 4.43 ERA (11 ER / 22.1 IP).
Scouting UConn (15-15, 5-7 Big East)
UConn is coming off a three game series against Cincinnati in which the Huskies were swept by the Bearcats.
Junior Matt Burnett leads the Huskies with a .353 batting average. Freshman Pierre LePage is batting .350 and leads the club with 42 hits on the season.
Freshman Mike Olt has smashed in 6 homeruns and 10 doubles on the season, both a team high, while sophomore Peter Fatse leads the team with 28 RBIs.
The UConn pitching is lead by starter freshman Elliot Glynn who has made seven starts on the season. Glynn is posting a 1-2 record on the season with a 5.91 ERA (21 ER / 32.0 IP). Sophomore Will Musson has made the most appearances (11) this season to post a 2-0 record with a 3.21 ERA (5 ER / 14.0 IP).
As a team, the Huskies are posting a 4.53 ERA (133 ER / 264.1 IP).
UConn leads the all-time series 76-71-3.
Last Time Out Against UConn
UMass dropped a 4-2 decision at UConn back in March. The Minutemen took an early 2-1 lead, but UConn scored three unanswered runs to take the victory.
Kyle Multner hit a two-run homerun in the top of the third to give UMass the lead. UConn came back in the bottom of the inning with two runs of its own and added another in the fourth to earn the win.
Mike Dicato made his first start of the season lasting 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits. Andy Tuetken was 2-for-3 on the day with a run scored, while Jim Macdonald was 2-for-4 at the plate for UMass.
Scouting Harvard (1-19, 0-4 Ivy League)
The Harvard Crimson are coming off a double-header against Columbia University where they were swept by the Lions. Harvard's lone win of the season came against Lafayette in game one of a doubleheader back in March.
Seniors Tom Stack-Babich and Matt Vance are the leading hitters for the Crimson. Stack-Babich is the leading hitter with a batting average of .391 along with 18 hits and five doubles. Vance also has 18 hits on the season and has a .261 batting average. Vance leads the club with three homeruns and 13 RBIs.
Senior Brad Unger earned the only win for the Crimson this season against Lafayette. Unger has gone 1-3 on the season with a 5.84 ERA (17 ER / 22.1 IP). Senior Max Warren earned the save against Lafayette and is posting a team low 4.82 ERA (10 ER / 18.2 IP) in six appearances.
Harvard leads the all-time series 25-14 against UMass.
The winner of round one of the Beanpot will go onto to play next Wednesday, April 16 at Fenway Park in the Beanpot Finals.
UMass in the Beanpot
UMass has won four Beanpot Championship titles under Coach Stone. UMass took home the titles in 1996, 1997, 1998, and 2000.
Last year, the Minutemen fell to Northeastern 17-6 in round one of the Beanpot.
