ARLINGTON, Va. - Bryan Leigh (Somerset, Mass.) put seven-straight zeros up on the George Washington side of the scoreboard to lead UMass baseball (7-11, 2-6 A-10) to a 6-3 victory over the host Colonials (16-12, 5-3 A-10) on Saturday afternoon at Barcroft Park. The sophomore right-hander didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning and had only allowed two before surrendering two runs in the eighth. Aaron Smith (Westfield, Mass.) came in to end the threat in the eighth and finished the game for UMass. Jim Macdonald (Cheshire, Conn.) had the biggest day at the plate for the Minutemen, going 2-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. The junior third baseman's two-run home run in the top of the first inning gave UMass the early lead.
Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.), Mike Donato (East Hartford, Conn.), and Andy Tuetken (Smithfield, R.I.) also finished with two hits apiece for UMass. Tuetken and Andrew Black (Baltimore, Md.) each drove in a pair of runs.
GW starter Eric Cantrell allowed six runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss. Tom Zebroski homered for the Colonials, while Andrew Abokhair was 2-4.
UMass jumped on GW with four runs in the top of the first inning and they all came after the two batters of the inning were retired. Tempesta singled with two outs, setting the stage for Macdonald's two-run home run to center field on a 2-0 pitch. Donato reset the table with a double right-center followed by a Garrity walk. Tuetken's single to left field scored both runners and gave the Minutemen an early 4-0 lead.
In the third inning, Macdonald led off with a double to center field and Donato walked. Both runners advanced on a groundout to first base to give UMass runners at second and third with one out. Macdonald scored on Black's () RBI groundout to give the Minutemen a 5-0 lead.
With two outs in the fifth inning, Bryan Garrity (Peabody, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. Tuetken later singled through the left side to score Garrity for his third RBI of the day and gave UMass a 6-0 lead.
The Colonials couldn't get to Leigh until the eighth. Gavin Swanson led the inning off with a single and Zebroski followed that up with a two-run homer to center field, making it a 6-2 game. After allowing another single, Smith came in for Leigh and got three quick outs to end the inning.
Abokhair led the ninth inning off with a double and advanced on a balk before scoring on a Tim Reeves groundout, making it 6-3. Smith ended any attempt at a comeback however, by getting a strikeout and groundout to end the game.
The Minutemen and Colonials conclude their three-game series on Sunday at noon.
