AMHERST, Mass. - UMass scored a run in the eighth inning and three in the ninth to erase a four-run deficit, but Central Connecticut (14-15) scored twice in the 12th inning to defeat the Minutemen (12-18), 9-7, on Tuesday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Jim Macdonald's (Cheshire, Conn.) RBI single in the ninth capped off the rally that tied the game, but Scott Intravaia's RBI single in the 12th, followed by an RBI double by Sean Allaire gave the Blue Devils the win. Intravaia was 4-for-5 on the day with two runs scored, while Allaire also collected three hits and drove in a pair. UMass' offense was led by Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.), who was 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Macdonald also added a home run in the eighth inning.
Chris Chagnon (1-2) pitched 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief to get the victory. Aaron Smith (Westfield, Mass.) came in for UMass in the ninth and was stellar, striking out the first five batters he faced on his way to three shutout innings until running into trouble in the 12th. After hitting Pat Epps to lead off the inning, Kyle Zarotney hit into a fielder's choice and later stole second. He scored on Intravaia's single to right to give the Blue Devils the lead. Alliare doubled to right-center in the next at-bat to drive in Intravaia with an insurance run.
Nick Serino (Saugus, Mass.) started on the mound for UMass, going five innings allowing four runs on six hits. The offense got him the early lead in the first inning with back-to-back RBI singles by Franczek and Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.). Franczek drove in another run in the third after Brian Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) led the inning off with a double down the right field line.
CCSU scored its first run in the second when Jak Kidd led off with a triple to deep center and scored on Casey Walko's groundout. Kidd's solo home run in the fourth got the Blue Devils back within one, 3-2, and they added two runs in the fifth on Anthony Scialdone's two-RBI hit, the team's fourth straight single. CCSU went on to add a run in the sixth and two in the seventh off Jared Freni (Malden, Mass.), who relieved Serino, to take a 7-3 lead.
Macdonald's second home run of the season came in the eighth, setting the table for UMass' ninth inning comeback. Kyle Multner (Peabody, Mass.) and Baudinet had back-to-back singles. Franczek drove in Multner to make it a two run game. With the Minutemen down to their last out, Macdonald hit an infield single that scored Baudinet and shortstop Scialdone overthrew first base on the play to score Franczek with the tying run.
The Minutemen return to action this weekend when they head to Philadelphia to take on Saint Joseph's in a three-game Atlantic 10 conference series beginning on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
