UMass Rowers Place Second At Atlantic 10 Championships

Camden, N.J. - The UMass women's rowing team placed second at the Atlantic 10 Championship, falling to Rhode Island on Saturday on the Cooper River near Camden, N.J. Previously, the Minutewomen had won the event in 12 straight years--the longest streak in any sport in Atlantic 10 history. The Minutewomen finished with 119 points, ousted by the Rams with 135, and followed by Saint Joseph's with 113 for third and Dayton with 81 for fourth. Rounding out the scoring was Duquesne (78) in fifth, George Washington (72) in sixth, Temple (61) in seventh, Fordham (47) in eighth, and La Salle (18) finished ninth.

Overall, UMass took the gold in the Second Varsity eight (7:11.7), the Novice four (8:25.9), and the Quad (7:47.7). The three-gold medal outing is an improvement from last year, when the Minutewomen finished first in only the Quad event. Rhode Island finished first in the Varsity eight, the Varsity four, and the Lightweight four.

UMass finished first in the Second Varsity eight Grand Final with a time of 7:11.7--four seconds ahead of second-place Rhode Island. The UMass' boat included Andrea Morand, Haley Fitzgerald, Samm Smith, Ali DiMetto, Dani Vollman, Amanda Mawn, Claire Champine, Julie Markus, and coxswain Molly Morgan.

The Minutewomen also earned the gold in the Varsity Quad with rowers Sarah Marsan, Airlina Burrill, Rachel Nealer, and Samm Smith. The four finished with a time of 7:47.7 to beat Duquesne by almost 26 seconds.

In the Varsity eight Grand Final, UMass placed third, three seconds behind the first place team (Rhode Island) and just 0.4 behind second-place Saint Joseph's. UMass' boat included Airlina Burrill, Sarah Marsan, Rachel Nealer, Erin Kelly, Terri O'Brien, Kelly Barrett, Kelsey Schachter, Liz Euiler, and coxswain Dana Pulda.

The Novice four finished first to earn five points for the Minutewomen with a time of 8:25.9, finishing 23 seconds ahead of Saint Joseph's. The UMass boat consisted of Liz Euiler, Kelly Barrett, Terri O'Brien, Meredith Kearney, and coxswain Sam Schonerr.

UMass placed second in the Varsity four Grand Final (8:45.3), falling to Rhode Island, but defeating Temple, Saint Joseph's, and Duquesne. The Novice eight also finished second with a time of 7:24.4, just four seconds behind Saint Joseph's.

The Minutewomen travel to Boston next weekend to take on MIT and Northeastern before heading to the ECAC Championships on May 3rd.
