AMHERST, Mass. - Chris Taylor's two home runs and six RBI led a 49ers' offense that was clicking as UMass baseball (11-16, 4-9 A-10) fell to Charlotte (28-8, 10-3 A-10), 18-3, on Friday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. Alex Burt added a home run and five RBI as the 49ers collected 22 hits off four different UMass pitchers. Mitchell Clegg (Woburn, Mass.) (1-4) took the loss, going 4 1/3 innings, allowing eight earned runs. Joe Yermal (7-0) went the distance for Charlotte, allowing three runs on six hits. Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) had the best day at the plate for UMass, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, while Kyle Multner (Peabody, Mass.) was 2-for-3 as well and drove in a run.
Charlotte jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the top of the first. The 49ers loaded the bases to start the game and a three-run double by clean-up batter Taylor cleared the bases. A sacrifice fly and a home run by O'Brien Taylor later in the inning would make it 5-0.
Taylor delivered again in the second inning, this time with a two-run home run that made it 7-0.
The 49ers put up six more in the fifth by collecting six-straight hits, including a three-run home run by Alex Burt.
The Minutemen got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Bryan Garrity (Peabody, Mass.) led of with a walk and advanced to second on a single by left fielder Andrew Black (Baltimore, Md.). With two outs, Multner delivered with a single to left field that scored Garrity.
It was another leadoff walk that got things started for UMass in the sixth. This time it was center fielder Brian Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.), who would advance to second on a Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.) bunt. Tempesta's second home run off the season would follow, making it 14-3.
The 49ers would tack on one run in the fifth, four in the eighth, and one in the ninth.
Freshman Peter Copa (Malden, Mass.) entered the game in the ninth at third base and singled that inning in his first career at-bat.
The Minutemen and 49ers resume their A-10 series on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Earl Lorden Field.
