Minutewomen finish sixth overall at the Knecht Cup

Camden, N.J. - The UMass women's varsity eight placed sixth overall at the 2008 Knecht Cup, held Saturday and Sunday April 12-13 in Camden N.J. The varsity quad placed first overall, while the second varsity eight finished second. The regatta provided competition for over 50 schools from all over the country. This was the last race before the Atlantic 10 Championships, held on the same river.

Bucknell won the event, with a time of 6:35.02 in the grand final. Following the Bison, Buffalo placed second, followed by Rhode Island, Wisconsin, Connecticut, and the Minutewomen. UMass finished with a time of 6:56.60. To qualify for the finals, the Minutewomen placed second on Saturday in their first heat with a time of 6:51.00 behind Buffalo (6:47.30). The varsity eight consisted of rowers Liz Euiler, Julie Markus, Sarah Marsan, Rachael Nealer, Airlina Burrill, Erin Kelly, Samm Smith, Kelsey Schachter and coxswain Dana Pulda.

The second varsity eight placed second overall, falling to URI in the grand final. With a time of 6:56.6, the Minutewomen finished ahead of UNC, Buffalo, Wisconsin, and Tulsa. They qualified by placing first in their heat on Saturday with a time of 7:00.0, crossing the finish line 12 seconds before second-place Fordham. Following Fordham was UConn, Colgate, Delaware, and Sacred Heart. The second varsity eight consisted of Andrea Morand, Haley Fitzgerald, Teri O'Brien, Kelly Barrett, Dani Vollman, Amanda Mawn, Claire Champine, and Ali DiMatteo along with coxswain Molly Morgan.

The varsity quad won, finishing 18 seconds ahead of Duquesne. Sarah Marsan, Airlina Burrill, Rachael Nealer, and Samm Smith completed the course in 7:36.80.

The novice eight finished third overall. UNC won the event with a time of 7:05.50, followed by URI (7:12.4) and UMass (7:13.5). The minutewomen qualified for the grand final by placing first on Saturday over Rochester, Lafayette, Robert Morris, Haverford, and Penn State.
