Box Score

OLEAN, N.Y. - UMass baseball (10-14, 4-8 A-10) split a doubleheader against St. Bonaventure (17-11, 7-5 A-10), winning the first game 6-1 and dropping the second 8-3, on Saturday afternoon at Fred Handler Park. Game-one featured a pitching gem from sophomore Bryan Leigh (Somerset, Mass.), who pitched a complete game three-hitter, allowing only one run and striking out seven. St. Bonaventure's clutch hitting in game-two was too much for the Minutemen, who could only push across three runs on 10 hits.

Junior Jim Macdonald (Cheshire, Conn.) gave UMass the lead for good in the eighth inning of game-one when he hit an RBI single through the left side which scored freshman Kyle Multner (Peabody, Mass.). UMass would then add another run in the eighth on an RBI single by sophomore Mike Donato (East Hartford, Conn.). The offense added three more insurance runs in the top of the ninth when redshirt sophomore Andrew Black (Baltimore, Md.) scored on a wild pitch and senior Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.) hit a two-run home run.

St. Bonaventure scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth when Randy Moley scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Sova.

UMass struggled to put runs on the board in game-two despite getting 10 hits. The Minutemen scored all their runs in the seventh inning when they plated three runs on three hits. Junior Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) and Multner had an RBI each in the inning and senior Andy Tuetken (Smithfield, R.I.) scored the other run of the inning for the Minutemen.

Freshman Nick Serino (Saugus, Mass.) started game-two for the Minutemen and took the loss, falling to 2-2 on the year. He allowed two earned runs over 4 1/3 innings. Senior Aaron Smith (Westfield, Mass.) and sophomore Jared Freni (Malden, Mass.) could not stop the Bonnies offense as they each allowed three earned runs. St. Bonaventure's offense was sparked by Brandon Salerno and Anthony Randich who each went 2-for-4 with a combined seven RBI.

UMass will next play at Fenway Park on Tuesday, April 15 when they will match-up with Boston College in the Beanpot Final. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
