OLEAN, N.Y. - UMass baseball's trip to Western N.Y. got off to a rough start on Friday afternoon as the Minutemen (9-13, 3-7 A-10) dropped a 7-2 decision to St. Bonaventure (16-10, 6-4 A-10) in game-one of a three-game series at Fred Handler Park. UMass broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the third inning, but the Bonnies put up five in the bottom half of the inning to take control of the game. Jim Britton got the win, going eight innings and allowing two runs in eight hits. Mitchell Clegg (Woburn, Mass.) started for UMass and took the loss, giving up all seven runs on six hits in four innings of work. The Bonnies' Randy Moley, the nation's leading hitter, was 2-for-3, drove in three runs, and scored twice to pace the home club's offense. Brian Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) was the top hitter for UMass, going 3-for-5 and driving in both of the team's runs. The teams will meet in game-two of the series on Saturday at noon.

UMass' bullpen was superb, with Mitchell Eilenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Charlie Benson (Southbury, Conn.) combining to shutout the Bonnies over the last four innings, allowing only one hit each.

UMass took the early lead in the third. Andrew Black (Baltimore, Md.) led the inning off with a single and was bunted over by Andy Tuetken (Smithfield, R.I). With two outs, Baudinet singled to right-center to score Black and put UMass on top, 1-0.

The Bonnies came right back in the bottom half of the inning. After the inning started with a double, walk, and sacrifice bunt, Kevin Suminski and TJ Pennino followed with back-to-back RBI singles. Moley then hit an inside-the-park three-run home run that quickly made it 5-1.

SBU added two more runs in the fifth inning. Pennino led off with single and advanced to second on an error. Brandon Salerno singled to left to score Pennino and Mulcahy later hit a sacrifice fly that scored Moley, who was intentionally walked, making it 7-1.

Black started things up in the UMass half of the seventh inning with a one-out single up the middle. Tuetken then reached on a fielder's choice in which everyone was safe and Kyle Multner (Peabody, Mass.) singled to left to load the bases with one away. Baudinet followed that up with a single to left field that scored Black, but Britton got out of the inning on the same play by virtue of left fielder Pennino throwing out Tuetken at the plate and catcher Salerno then throwing out Multner trying to advance to third.

Black and Mike Donato (East Hartford, Conn.) were both 2-for-4 on the day for UMass.

St. Bonaventure's one-two-three of Suminski, Pennino, and Moley were a combined 6-for-11 with five runs driven in, and five runs scored. The rest of the Bonnies' lineup was a combined 2-for-15.
