Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. - Behind a solo home run by Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.), a two-RBI single by Andy Tuetken (Smithfield, R.I.), and some strong pitching by Mitchell Clegg (Woburn, Mass.), UMass (0-1) jumped out to a 3-1 lead on #1 Arizona State (9-0) after four innings, but the Sun Devils came back with two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth, and exploded for seven runs in the eighth to defeat the Minutemen, 13-4, in UMass' season-opener on Friday night at Packard Stadium. Clegg, a junior transfer from Maine, went five innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out two. The Minutemen chased ASU starter and All-American Josh Satow from the game after four innings in which he allowed three runs on five hits. Reyes Dorado earned the victory for the Sun Devils, tossing two scoreless innings of relief, while Mitchell Eilenberg (Brooklyn, N.Y.) allowed six runs in 2 1/3 innings to take the loss for UMass.

ASU took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by All-American Brett Wallace (1-2, 3 BB, HR, 4 R) in the third inning, on what was the first hit allowed by Clegg.

UMass had its big inning in the fourth when Franczek (2-5, 2B, HR) led the inning off with a homer to left-center. After two outs, sophomores Ben Kessel (Richboro, Pa.) and Garrett Glashoff (Buchanon, N.Y.) reached on a walk and single. Tuetken (2-4) stroked a single to left that plated both runners and gave UMass a 3-1 lead.

Clegg didn't get into trouble until the fifth when he walked two and hit a batter to load the bases. Ike Davis singled to center with two outs to score two of the runners and tie the game at three apiece.

After Clegg was lifted for Eilenberg in the sixth, the Sun Devils scored three runs on two walks, a single, an error, and a balk to open up a 6-3 advantage.

UMass got one run back in the eighth, when Mike Gedman (Framingham, Mass.) reached on an error and then later scored on another error to make it a 6-4 ballgame.

ASU blew the game open in the eighth when they scored seven runs on three hits, including a Rocky Laguna home run, and five walks. Eilenberg, Gedman, and Nate Monroy (Flemington, N.J.) all pitched in the inning for UMass.

The Minutemen and Sun Devils continue their three-game weekend series on Saturday with first pitch slated for 8 p.m. eastern time.
