AMHERST, Mass. - Junior left-hander Mitchell Clegg (Woburn, Mass.) (1-1) hurled eight strong innings, scattering seven hits and allowing only one run to lead UMass (5-8, 1-3 A-10) to a 7-1 victory over Xavier on Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. The junior transfer didn't allow anything more than a single and walked only one batter to earn his first victory in a UMass uniform. The offense did its part as well, pounding out a season-high 18 hits. Every UMass batter collected a hit, while Brian Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.), Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.), Jim Macdonald (Cheshire, Conn.), and Bryan Garrity (Peabody, Mass.) had three hits each. The win was the third this week for the Minutemen, who are now 3-0 at home. The teams will conclude their series on Sunday with a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for noon.
Franczek, Macdonald, and Garrity all drove in two runs apiece, while leadoff man Baudinet scored three runs. Junior Nathan Monroy (Flemington, N.J.) pitched a perfect ninth inning in relief of Clegg.
Charlie Leesman (0-3) went four innings for Xavier, allowing four runs, three earned, on 10 hits to take the loss. Drew Schmidt and Jordan Conley each went 2-4 for the Musketeers, with Schmidt driving in their lone run.
UMass jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI single by Macdonald that scored Baudinet, who had led off the bottom of the first inning with a single. That lead increased in the third inning when another two-out single, this time by Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.), scored Kyle Multner (Peabody, Mass.), who doubled.
Xavier got a run back in the fifth when Adam Posono singled, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on Schmidt's base-hit to left.
Baudinet walked to lead off the fifth and advanced to third on a bad pick-off throw from Xavier reliever Mike Creevy. Franczek promptly singled to knock in Baudinet. Another throwing error by Creevy on a pick-off attempt put Franczek on third and he eventually scored on Macdonald's single up the middle to make it a 4-1 game.
Two more UMass runs scored in the seventh when Garrity drilled a single to right-center that scored Franczek and Tempesta, both of whom had advanced on a double-steal after reaching base with a walk and a fielder's choice.
The Minutemen added one more insurance run in the eighth when Baudinet singled to right with two-outs and Franczek knocked him in with a double over the right fielder's head to make it 7-1.
