Men Take 12th, Women Take 13th At New England Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - This past weekend, the UMass track and field teams traveled to Boston University to take part in the New England Championships. Overall, the men placed 12th, while the women placed 13th. The men's top performance of the day came from sophomore Andrew McCann (Fayetteville, N.Y.) who placed fifth in the 3000 meter run. His time of 8:28.05 qualified him for next weekend IC4A Championships. Two relay teams also qualified for the IC4A Championships. The team of sophomore Ryan DiOrio (Bridgewater, N.J.), freshman Scott VanderMolen (Tully, N.Y.), junior Peter Fortunato (Tewksbury, Mass.), and senior Ryan Durkin (Andover, Mass.) placed sixth in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 7:45.54. In the distance medley VanderMolen, senior James Bentley (Cotuit, Mass.), DiOrio, and Durkin finished ninth in 10:13.93.
The women's top performance of the day came from freshman Gina Perno (Plainview, N.Y.) who placed fifth in the 1000 meter run. With a time of 2:55.17, Perno is tied with Shana Smith for having the fifth fastest time at UMass in the 1000 meter run.
In other men's events, freshman Darius Velez placed 17th in the 55 meter dash preliminaries with a time of 6.63 seconds. In the finals for the 55 meter hurdles, sophomore Tyler Cotto (Holliston, Mass.) placed sixth in 7.70 seconds. Senior Nathan Barksdale (Valparaiso, Indiana) placed 22nd in the 200 meter dash preliminaries in 22.67 seconds.
In the finals for the 400 meter dash, sophomore Samuel Laorenza (North Andover, Mass.) placed tenth in 50.30 seconds. Freshman Daniel Schwartz (Sudbury, Mass.) placed 17th in the 500 meter dash preliminaries in 1:06.38.
Junior Josh Boone (Gardner, Mass.) placed seventh in the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:31.63. In the 3000 meter run, sophomore Jonathan Pierce (Hanover, Mass.) finished sixth in 8:31.13, while senior Matt Klypka (Oakland, N.J.) finished 11th in 8:41.22. In the 5000 meter run, junior Jesse Regnier (Hampden, Mass.) took fifth place with a time of 14:50.90.
In field events, sophomore Brian Miller (Foxboro, Mass.) placed 11th in the high jump competition with a height of 6 feet, 4.25 inches.
In other women's events, red-shirted senior Kristen Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.) took second place in the pole vault competition with a height of 12 feet, 3.50 inches. In the 3000 meter run, senior Christina DeRosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) took third place with a time of 9:42.26, while red-shirted freshman Shiyi Zan (Ottawa, Ontario) finished eighth in 10:13.58. Red-shirted senior Danielle Bolt (Mattapan, Mass.) placed seventh in the 55 meter dash finals with a time of 7.26 seconds and placed fifth in the 200 meter dash preliminaries in 25.32 seconds.
The relay team of senior Jen Curtain (Medford, Mass.), freshman Samantha Sacchetti (Weymouth, Mass.), freshman Liz Fisk (Seekonk, Mass.), and Perno placed 14th in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 9:43.35. In the distance medley, the team of senior Taryn Trapp (Nampa, Idaho), sophomore Ros Murphy (Beverly, Mass.), freshman Lauren Stocker (Westfield, Mass.), and Zan placed ninth with a time of 12:15.79.
In field events, freshman Jaclyn Imhoff (Milton, Mass.) placed 11th in the high jump competition with a height of 5 feet, 3 inches. Freshman Stephanie Aguguo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) placed 23rd in the triple jump with a distance of 31 feet, 7.50 inches. In the shot put, sophomore Lisa Wilson (Holden, Mass.) placed 18th with a throw of 39 feet, 4.50 inches.
Overall, the University of Connecticut took first place for both the men and women.
Next weekend, both teams will travel back to Boston where the men will take part in the IC4A Championships, while the women will take part in the ECAC Championships.
