AMHERST, Mass. - Behind 22 points from Pam Rosanio (Southampton, Pa.) and Alisha Tatham's (Brampton, Ontario) first career double-double, UMass (13-15, 5-8) defeated St. Bonaventure (18-10, 6-7), 70-50, on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center. Tatham, playing in the final home game of her career, set career-highs in points (15) and rebounds (14), while Kate Mills (Elkton, Md.) added 10 points, seven assists, and a career-high eight blocks. The Minutewomen used a 24-2 run over eight minute span early in the second half to blow open a close game.
UMass shot 59.1% (26-44) for the game, while the Bonnies, who were led by Andrea Doneth's 21 points, shot 32.2% (19-59). UMass also held a large advantage on the glass, 36-26, and shot 5-for-8 from 3-point range. UMass' defense held Dana Mitchell, the A-10's leading scorer, to six points.
After St. Bonaventure opened the game with a 3-pointer, the Minutewomen scored 11 consecutive points on the way to a 17-2 run to give them a 17-5 lead with 13:28 left in the half. The Bonnies battled back with the help of five 3-pointers over the next 10 minutes to tie the game, 26-26, with 3:18 left. The teams would trade baskets for the rest of the half to go to the locker rooms tied, 30-30.
Tatham led a balanced UMass attack in the first half with eight points, while Sakera Young (Glassboro, N.J.) added seven. The Minutewomen outshot the Bonnies, 56.5% (13-23) to 39.3% (11-28), and held the edge in rebounds, 14-13, but seven of St. Bonventure's rebounds were offensive. Tiara Johnson led the Bonnies with four first half points.
The Bonnies jumped out to take the lead, 34-32, early in the second half. UMass responded with separate runs of 9-0 and 15-0, allowing only one St. Bonaventure basket in almost 10 minutes, to open up a 56-36 lead. Rosanio took over the game in that stretch, scoring 14 points. Tatham and Cerie Mosgrove (Needham, Mass.) added 3-pointers for UMass down the stretch as the Minutewomen were able to hold off any St. Bonaventure comeback attempt.
The Minutewomen close the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Philadelphia to take on Temple in a 2 p.m. contest.
