Amherst, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to BU in their season opener Saturday. Even with outstanding performances from freshman Joey Sbordon, (Franklin, Mass.) and junior Juan Moliere (San Juan, PR) for the men and senior captain Christa Narus (Stony Brook, N.Y.) for the women, it wasn't enough to push past the Terriers at Competition Pool.
Moliere started off his 2008-09 season just where he ended his 2007-08 season. The reigning A-10 50 free Champion remained on top as he took first not only in the 50 free (21.28) but the 100 free (47.41) as well. Moliere also helped the 400 free relay team to a second place finish (3:12.72) swimming the tail end of the race.
Freshman Joey Sbordon was also a member of the second-place 400 free relay team, swimming the second leg of the relay. In his first career collegiate meet, the freshman placed first in his only two individual events of the day finishing with a time of 9:46.43 in the 1000 free, and 4:39.06 in the 500 free, beating his next competitor by over six seconds.
Junior Mike Berthaume (Hapden, Mass.) was also a top finisher against the Terriers as he finished first in the 200 fly (1:56.27), and senior leader Nate Bromage (Three Rivers, Mass.) finished second in the 200 free (1:47.06).
The men's diving team placed three divers in a row in the one-meter dive with Jason Cook (Amherst, Mass.) taking second, Byron Johnson (Taunton, Mass.) third, and Adam Duffield (Brookfield, Conn.) fourth, scoring 305.18, 253.83, and 244.65 respectively. Cook also placed first in the three-meter dive (359.63) with Johnson behind him in third (281.63).
Senior captain Christa Narus led the way for the Minutewomen as she took first in the 200 fly (2:06.22) and the 200 free (1:54.81), while also leading the 400 free relay team to a first place finish (3:39.63).
The Minutewomen showed their team depth against the Terriers placing numerous swimmers in all different events. Sophomore Jessica Starosielec (Colonia, N.J.) placed second, with a time of 2:26.67, in the 200 breast, while junior Elizabeth Walsh (Marshfield, Mass.) had a pair of third place finishes, the 200 free (1:56.45) and the 100 free (54.07).
Senior diver Karen Upperco (Titusville, N.J.) finished the day with two second-place finishes in both the one-meter (223.95) and three-meter (256.80) dives while sophomore teammate Anne Fogerty (Allentown, Pa.) finished second in the one-meter (219.75) and senior Sarah Hortsmann (Hockessin, Del.) took third in the three-meter (248.55).
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams will return to competition next Saturday, Oct. 25, as they open up at home against Army. The meet will begin at 2 p.m. at Joseph Rogers Pool.
