STORRS, Conn. - Highlighted by an impressive third singles victory from junior Maude Lecluyse, the UMass women's tennis team pulled off its fifth-consecutive win over interstate rival UConn by a 5-2 final on Wednesday afternoon. The Minutewomen swept the doubles matches then took four of six singles tilts for the win. The contest marked UMass' only dual match of the fall season.

"To go out and to play with this intensity and this eagerness to win is an outstanding effort for our first match," Head Coach Judy Dixon said. "I am so pleased for their effort because they fought like crazy."

Lecluyse stole the show with her 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Allison Campitiello, the third singles winner from the prestigious Eastern Collegiate Invitational held in September. Down one set, Lecluyse fought back to earn one of her finest wins of her career.

"I changed my strategy after the first set, so I'm really happy that I could get good adjustments and pull it out," she said. "It was a good win."

Every doubles match finished within four points, but UMass pulled off all three wins. The most competitive match came from sophomore Kaitlyn Carpenter and senior Stephanie Gimenez who won at the third position, 9-8 (7-4), in a tiebreaker.

Reigning first-team All-Conference performer Candynce Boney impressed in her dual debut at No. 1 singles. She topped UConn's Kelly LoRusso by a 6-3, 6-2 final. Other singles wins included Gimenez at No. 5 (6-1, 3-6, 6-1) and senior Laura Danai at No. 6 (7-5, 6-2).

"In a few places, like Maude [Lecluyse] and Stephanie [Gimenez], they played opponents who they lost to last year," Dixon said. "So it's even a better effort than just on paper because it means we took matches that we lost last year and turned them around. As a coach, that's what you want to see in your team."

The Minutewomen are back in action Nov. 7-10 when they play in the Big Green Invitational hosted by Dartmouth College.
