AMHERST, Mass. - Led by a two-goal effort by Jill Powers and a one-goal two-assist day from Mary Shea, No. 17 UMass field hockey (10-3, 2-0 A-10) dominated Saint Louis (4-7, 0-1 A-10), 5-0, in Atlantic 10 play on Sunday afternoon at Garber Field. Katie Kelly added a goal and an assist, while Katelyn Orlando scored as well. Sarah Williams earned the shutout in goal and ran her record to 3-0. The Minutewomen controlled the game throughout, outshooting the Billikens, 23-8, and drew 10 penalty corners to Saint Louis' five.
Orlando, who scored twice on Friday at Richmond, made it three goals for the week when she opened the scoring 7:59 into the game. Shea worked into the circle on the right side and centered the ball to Orlando for the senior's team-leading ninth goal of the season. She also leads the Minutewomen in points with 19.
The Minutewomen made it 2-0 in the 19th minute when Powers tipped in a Kelly pass. For the junior transfer Powers it was her sixth tally of the season, while Kelly picked up her fourth assist of the year on the play.
UMass took that 2-0 lead into halftime, outshooting the Billikens, 9-4, while corners were even, 4-4, over the first 35 minutes.
Just as she set up the first goal of the first half, Shea did the same in the second half, sending a crossing pass from the right side of the circle to an open Kelly in front of the net in the 44th minute to make it 3-0. It was the sophomore forward's sixth goal of the year, while Shea picked up her sixth assist, tied for tops on the team.
Powers scored her second marker of the game in the 54th minute when she knocked in the rebound of her own shot to increase the UMass lead to 4-0. Her seventh goal of the year places her second on the team in that category.
Shea closed the scoring in the 61st minute by working the ball into the circle to the left of the goal and blasting a reverse stick shot found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. It is the sixth goal of the senior captain's career and her first since Sept. 4, 2006 at Harvard.
Williams made two saves in goal to get her first shutout victory of the year. It was the 11th victory and sixth shutout of the junior goalkeeper's career.
Makaela Potts led the Minutewomen with seven shots and also denied the Billikens a goal with a defensive save on a penalty corner. Jacklyn McGranahan led SLU with four shots.
The 17th-ranked Minutewomen return to action next weekend when they travel to the Philadelphia area for two A-10 contests. On Friday, UMass plays at La Salle at 3 p.m. The weekend closes with a noon game at West Chester on Sunday.
