AMHERST, Mass. - Senior captain Bryan Garrity (Peabody, Mass.) received the Francis Tripp Award by the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Code League. This past summer, Garrity was named to the roster on June 5, 2007 to replace Rover Lara from LSU. While with the Gatemen, Garrity was batting .167 and helped lead the pitching staff to a 2.99 ERA, which was the third best ERA in the league. Garrity received the start in twenty-five out of twenty-six games. The Gatemen ended the season with a 15-29 record.
The award is selected by the Wareham Gatemen Organization and is awarded to the player who has made the most positive impact upon the Wareham Community-both on and off the field. In addition, the player must show good character and sportsmanship. Previous winners of the award include Carlos Pena (1997), Barry Zito (1998), Justin Masterson (2005), and Steffan Wilson (2006). The award was handed out at the completion of the 2007 season.
Garrity has been with the Minutemen since his freshman year when he was third on the team in batting with a .264 average and an on base percentage of .335, which was fourth among UMass hitters. As a freshman, Garrity was also third on the team in doubles (7) and fourth in runs scored (21). As a sophomore, Garrity batted .264 and increased his on base percentage to .361. Last season, Garrity was batting .240 and had a field percentage of .984.
Before UMass, Garrity was a four-year member of the Peabody baseball squad that posted Greater Boston League championships in 2001, 2003, and 2004. In 2004, Garrity was named captain and posted a .302 batting average with 12 RBI's and 10 stolen bases leading the team to an Eastern Mass Sectional championship. Garrity and the Minutemen will return to action this season beginning on March 7th at Arizona State.
