Christina DeRosa Earns Atlantic 10/UMass Weekly Honors

AMHERST, Mass. - After winning the 5,000 meters at the NYC Gotham Cup with the second fastest time in school history last Friday, senior Christina DeRosa has been named the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track Performer of the Week. She was also named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Co-Athlete of the Week alongside Ricky Harris from the men's basketball team. Harris was named the ESPN National Player of the Week and the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week after averaging 23 points in wins at nationally ranked Dayton and against Charlotte. The pair will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon on Wednesday at Noon in the Campus Center.
DeRosa qualified for the ECAC Indoor Championships with her win in the 5,000 meters where she completed the race in a personal-best time of 16 minutes, 58.47 seconds. That time was her career best by over 26 seconds. DeRosa continued her dominate senior season with her second ECAC qualification after qualifying in the 3,000 meter race with her win in the opening meet of the season.
Harris led UMass in scoring in its win at No. 14 Dayton and against Charlotte on Saturday. Harris connected on 9-of-18 shots from 3-point range. Overall, the sophomore guard scored 46 points on the week with 22 at Dayton and 24 vs. Charlotte. He shot 50 percent from the floor (11-for-22) and knocked down 9-of-18 attempts from beyond the arc in a pair of victories for the Minutemen. He tied his career high with five 3-pointers on Jan. 16 in Massachusetts' 82-71 win at Dayton as he added five rebounds and two assists.
Harris has scored at least 20 points in ten of Massachusetts' 17 games this season. He has been in double-figures in every game this year and is second to Gary Forbes (20.3 ppg) in scoring (20.1).
The pair will be honored at the UMass Sports Luncheon this Wednesday afternoon. The luncheon begins at Noon and will be held in room 1009 of the Campus Center. Hockey head coach Don "Toot" Cahoon and women's basketball head coach Marnie Dacko will be the featured speakers.
