CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - No. 11 Harvard scored two goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half to defeat the UMass men's soccer team 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Ohiri Field. The Crimson tallied goals in the 55th minute and the 66th minute of play. Freshman Stuart Amick scored the Minutemen's only tally in the 88th minute off a feed from junior Prince Ofosu. The goal was the first of Amick's career. Massachusetts will host Northeastern this Saturday for its home opener at Rudd Field at 1 p.m.
The two sides battled through a scoreless first half with UMass keeper Zack Simmons making all three of his saves.
Ten minutes into the second half, Preseason All-American Andre Akpan controlled a free kick from Matt Hoff and fired it into the lower-right corner past Simmons.
Harvard (6-0) scored again at the 65:31 mark when Brian Grimm fired a low line-drive to the left post. Adam Rousmaniere found Akpan who tapped a pass to Grimm at the top of the box.
Grimm's goal stood as the game-winner after Amick found the goal for UMass (2-4) in the 88th minute. Amick took a cross from Ofosu and then fired to the lower right post for the goal.
Crimson keeper Adam Hahn made three saves for the game - all in the second half.
Harvard outshot UMass 14-to-10 and earned six corner kicks to just three for the Minutemen.
