WEST POINT, N.Y. - Led by a strong doubles performance, the UMass women's tennis team opened their season with an impressive showing at the Eastern Collegiate Invitational on Friday. Three Minutewomen pairs advanced to the quarterfinals of their bracket while freshman Tanisha Hodgson was the only player to advance that far in singles. All quarterfinal matches will be played on Saturday.
Freshman Kaitlyn Carpenter started things in the No. 2 singles bracket. As the eighth seed, Carpenter defeated Joy Adewumi of UMBC, 6-1, 4-6, Ret (inj.). Carpenter then fell in the round of 16 to Dana Postupack (Fairfield) 6-2, 6-0.
Hodgson, another freshman, took part in third singles. As the third seed in the bracket, she wouldn't disappoint, defeating Camille Simonetti of Bucknell, 7-5, 6-0. Hodgson then went on to defeat Bridie Burke of Army, 6-4, 6-3. She will play Lauren Clifton of Hofstra in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Sophomore Stephanie Gimenez also fought hard in the same bracket. After splitting the first two sets, she fell to Joy Johnson of Loyola in a marathon third set, 16-14. Gimenez then had to back out of the consolation match due to injury.
Doubles was where UMass impressed. Freshman Candynce Boney and senior Masha Pozar were the second seed in the first singles bracket. After receiving a bye, they beat Mirelva Colon and Natalie Fouche of Marist, 8-3. They will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
In second doubles, sophomore Maude Lecluyse teamed with junior Laura Murillo. After receiving a bye as the third seed, they defeated Anna Broverman and Stephanie Scheinoff (Pittsburgh) 8-3. Also in the bracket, senior Kristin DiPiero and junior Carly Ludmer won a pair to join Lecluyse and Murillo in the quarterfinals. They beat a duo from Long Island, 8-3, then defeated Nikki Adams and Shawna Sarson of Quinnipiac, 8-4.
