AMHERST, Mass. -- 14 home games highlight the 2007-08 University of Massachusetts women's basketball schedule released Thursday by head coach Marnie Dacko. The Minutewomen begin the season by hosting Vermont on Friday, November 9 and will play six games against teams who reached the postseason last year. The schedule also features an exhibition game in the Cage (Nov. 2 vs. Athletes in Action) and the Minutewomen's 6:00 p.m. game with Boston College on Wednesday, Nov. 14 is the first game of a doubleheader. At 8:00 p.m. the men's team hosts Yale.
"Once again, we have assembled a very challenging schedule that will help to prepare us for the Atlantic 10 Conference season," said Dacko. "Our non-conference schedule features teams from the Big East, ACC and America East as well as a Thanksgiving Weekend Tournament in North Carolina against several teams that played in either the NCAA Tournament or WNIT last year."
After hosting Athletes in Action in an exhibition game at the Cage, the Minutewomen open the regular season with back-to-back home games vs. Vermont and Boston College. The Minutewomen hit the road for the first time at Northeastern (Nov. 17) before heading south for a Thanksgiving Tournament at East Carolina University. UMass will play Jacksonville in the first round (Nov. 23) and then either East Carolina or Winthrop the next day. East Carolina was a NCAA Tournament team a year ago.
On Nov. 28, UMass makes its second trip to Boston to face Boston University and then returns home to host WNIT participant Hartford on Dec. 1. The Minutewomen make their first of two trips to the New York City area to face St. John's out of the Big East on Dec. 4 and then return to the Mullins Center for a Dec. 8 tilt with Maine. Road games at Villanova (Dec. 11) and Wagner (Dec. 15) and a home contest against Buffalo (Dec. 22) round out the first part of the schedule.
After a few days off for the holidays, the Minutewomen are right back in action for a New Year's Eve matinee at Providence. UMass hosts Longwood on Jan. 3 before a nine-day break leading up to A-10 play. UMass opens the A-10 slate by hosting Rhode Island on Jan. 12 and then head back on the road for a Jan. 15 contest at Charlotte.
The Minutewomen return home Jan. 20 to host Richmond in a game that will be televised nationally on CSTV before hosting its final non-conference game of the year, Jan. 22 vs. Yale. A trip to Xavier (Jan. 26) and home game vs. Fordham (Jan. 30) round out the month of January for the Minutewomen.
UMass hosts Saint Joseph's (Feb. 3) to open up the month of February and then hit the road for consecutive games at La Salle (Feb. 6) and Rhode Island (Feb. 9). After a home game vs. George Washington (Feb. 13), UMass goes right back on the road for a pair of games at Saint Louis (Feb. 16) and Duquesne (Feb. 20). The Minutewomen return to the Mullins Center for a Feb. 23 contest with Dayton and then host St. Bonaventure for Senior Night, Feb. 27. The regular season concludes March 1 at Temple.
The 2007-08 A-10 Women's Basketball Tournament will be at Philadelphia's Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse on the campus of Saint Joseph's University.
