AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Athletic Department has announced the plans for expansion of the UMass Softball Complex. The project, which will begin this fall, includes the addition of nearly 400 permanent seats as well as a press box and is due to be completed for the start of the 2008 season.
"We are very excited to make these improvements to our softball facility," said UMass Athletic Director John McCutcheon. "This is another facility improvement we have been able to make as we continue the forward momentum for this athletic department. The project is being funded completely from private sources and we would like to thank our donors for their fantastic support of UMass Softball."
The new stands will stretch from dugout to dugout and include 101 chairback seats in the section directly behind home plate. Two sections of bench seating with a capacity for 293 spectators will run across to each dugout on the first and third-base lines. The seats will be angled to ensure a completely unobstructed view for fans. Handicap accessible seating will also be available.
"This is truly one of the most exciting things to happen for our softball program," said UMass Head Coach Elaine Sortino. "Most importantly, our very loyal fans will now have a great view of our games."
A press box 18 feet in length will be constructed behind home plate at field level to accommodate the radio crews and writers covering the softball program. High-speed Internet access and phone lines will be available as well ensuring proper coverage of the team.
The Minutewomen have won 13 Atlantic 10 championship in the last 14 years and 19 overall. They advanced to their 13th consecutive and 17th overall NCAA Tournament last year while hosting a regional for the second straight season.
