AMHERST, Mass. - Rightfielder Scott Brown blasted two home runs and drove in four runs to lead the University of Rhode Island (8-17, 5-4 A-10) to a 16-3 win over the University of Massachusetts (6-13, 3-6 A-10) on Sunday afternoon. The win gave the Rams the series victory after the teams split a doubleheader on Saturday. The 16 runs were a season high for URI as every starter recorded a hit. Leftfielder Gregg Allen and designated hitter Eric Larson each hit a home run to go along with Brown's two for Rhode Island. James Norcott (2-3) pitched seven innings to earn the win. Sophomore right-hander Tim Comiskey (1-3; Great River, NY) lasted two innings and picked up the loss for UMass.

The Minutemen struck first in the bottom of the opening frame. Lead-off batter Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.) reached base on a catcher's interference call and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lou Proietti (Hamilton, Ont.). Team-leading hitter Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) then plated Franczek with a RBI single to centerfield.

The UMass lead would be short-lived as Rhode Island came back with two runs of their own in the top half of the second inning. The Rams would go on to score a run in the fourth inning, three in the fifth, three in the sixth, six in the seventh, and one in the ninth. URI collected 18 hits in all and benefited from 10 walks handed out by UMass pitchers.

UMass's second and third runs came in the eighth inning Franczek and Proietti reached on back-to-back one-out walks. Franczek would score on a double-steal and Proietti scored moments later on a freshman Ben Kessel RBI single.

The Minutemen used five pitchers in the contest. Starter Comiskey went the first two innings, giving up two runs, both of which were unearned. Mitchell Eilenberg (Brooklyn, NY), Beau Hodges (Manchester, NH), Rory McDonald (East Longmeadow, Mass.), and Joe Bastow (Pittsfield, Mass.) pitched final seven innings, combining to give up 14 runs on 17 hits.

The homestand continues for the Minutemen on Monday as they host the Eagles of Boston College in a 3 p.m. game at Earl Lorden Field. The game will be broadcast on WMUA 91.1 FM. Marc Bertrand and Zach Claudio will be covering the action. You can also follow the game pitch-by-pitch on Gametracker at UMassathletics.com.
