Box Score

DAYTON, Ohio - UMass starter Jim Cassidy (Medway, Mass) pitched 7 1/3 strong innings to lead the Minutemen (14-18, 8-9 Atlantic 10) to a 4-3 win over Dayton (17-24, 6-11) on Saturday afternoon. The Junior Right-hander allowed only two earned runs on seven hits and struck four, all while winning his fifth straight decision and running his record to 5-1. Bryan Adamski (South Deerfield, Mass.) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to earn his third save of the season. The offense was paced by Travis Munsey (Durham, NH) and Bill Rankin (Willington, Conn.), with three hits each.

Quinn Haselhorst (6.0 IP, 10 H, 3 ER) received the loss for Dayton. The Flyers were led by first baseman Jeff Mercer (3-4) and shortstop Michael Massa (2-5, HR).

Sophomore second baseman Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) was 2-4 with a triple for the Minutemen. He was now reached base in all 31 games he has played this season, 33 straight dating back to last season.

Aside from his ninth relief appearance of the season, Adamski went 2-3 at the plate, recording his fifth double and an RBI.

UMass set the tone from start. Lou Proietti (Hamilton, Ont.) and Tempesta singled in the first to get things started. Following a successful double steal, Adamski doubled to left, scoring both runners.

UMass kept things going in the fourth. Bryan Garrity (Peabody, Mass.) led the inning off with a walk and was bunted over to second by Rankin. Brian Baudinet (Watertown, Conn.) followed by flying out to deep center, allowing Garrity to tag and advance to third. Munsey then drove him in on a 0-2 pitch that he lined to center for a single, giving UMass a 3-0 lead.

Dayton came back with a run of their own in the fifth, a sacrifice fly by Cole Tyrell that drove in Joe McSoley.

The Minutemen scored their fourth and final run in the sixth. It was then that Rankin, after singling to right, scored all the way from first on a double by Munsey that was torched down the leftfield line. It was Munsey's eighth two-base hit of the season.

Dayton made things interesting late. Massa's home run to centerfield leading off the eighth off Cassidy made it 4-2. That was followed up by a fly out and a single. Adamski was then brought in and gave a single of his own before inducing a double-play to end the Flyer threat in the eighth.

In the bottom of the ninth, Frank Tedesco singled through the left side with one out for Dayton with runners at send and third. One run scored and the tying run was held up at third. Adamski rose to the occasion however, retiring to next two batter on a foul out and a ground out to end the game.

UMass will look for the weekend sweep on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Fans can follow the action from Dayton on Gametracker at UMassathletics.com.
