BOSTON - After a 45-minute delay because no umpires were on hand, UMass (12-18) fell to Holy Cross (11-18) in seven innings as the Minutemen bats were silenced by a parade of Crusader pitchers. Seven different hurlers held UMass to just three hits and three runs, one earned. UMass starter Mike Dicato (Winthrop, Mass.) took the loss dropping to 0-6 on the season. Sophomore Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) reached base for the 29th straight game in the sixth inning.
UMass hurler Mike DiCato made his second start in the second round of the Beanpot in as many years. The sophomore ran into trouble in the third inning. After recording the first out on a strikeout, he yielded consecutive singles and then surrendered an RBI double, leaving runners at second and third. After another strikeout, Holy Cross scored two more runs on an error by Lou Proietti (Hamilton, Ont.) and an errant pickoff throw by DiCato.
UMass scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Bill Rankin (Willington, Conn.) laced a single to right field. The senior moved over to third on a passed ball and then a wild pitch. With two outs, he crossed the plate on the second wild pitch of the inning, to bring the score to 4-1.
The Minutemen scraped together two more runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to some sloppy Crusader defense. Proietti and Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.) reached on a hit batsman and a walk, respectively, before Adam Tempesta moved them over on an error on a sacrifice bunt. Two runs came home on consecutive fielder's choice by Bryan Adamski (South Deerfield, Mass.) and Rankin, bridging the gap by two runs.
In the top of the seventh, Holy Cross opened the floodgates, adding four runs on three hits and an error off Adamski, who came on in relief. The lead proved to be too much for the Minutemen in the seventh.
UMass will resume play on Friday when they face Dayton on the road for a three game series. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
