Recap | Box Score | Notes
UMass Coach Travis Ford
On his team's up-tempo style:
"As many 3s as we take, we're going to go on some scoring runs. We're not a big, physical team, but we can get the ball up the floor. I think we're a fun team to watch. There is a method to the madness."
On winning to open the season:
"There were a lot of reasons we wanted this one. We've changed styles of play as drastically as anybody in America. Now (the players) trust this is something good and we can come back out tomorrow and keep it going."
On Cal Poly:
"Cal Poly is a good basketball team, and I think they'll win their league. We beat a team tonight that is going to win a lot of games."
On frequently changing defensive schemes:
"We don't guard anybody well, so we're trying to camouflage our weaknesses and throw the kitchen sink at people."
On opening the season on a neutral court:
"It's been great. (The McLeod Center) is a beautiful arena. Their facilities at UNI are amazing, from the Dome to this arena. And everyone has been great since we've been out here."
Cal Poly Coach Kevin Bromley
On the difference in the game:
"There was a three- or four-minute stretch where we made turnovers that led directly to points. We didn't shoot the ball very well tonight, and that definitely hurt us. Plus, we got in a little foul trouble."
On the bench contributing 30 points:
"That was a big positive. We've got to keep moving those guys along. We've got some solid guard play, and those guys are still maturing."
UMass Guard Ricky Harris
On playing in a mostly-empty arena:
"It's harder to get up with the fans not here. It's harder to play on defense, but we had more energy from our bench. They were spirited and kept us in the game. It always feels good to get the first win. Now we celebrate for 20 minutes and then think about the next game."
