UMass Men's and Women's Swimming And Diving Falls to Boston University

AMHERST, Mass. - In the first dual meet of the season, after a great effort, the UMass men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to Boston University Terriers. The men's team lost 124-119 and the women's team lost 143-100 at the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. pool. Sophomore Juan Moliere placed first in the 50 free (21.19) and also the 100 free (47.32) to pace the Minutemen.

On the men's side, the meet opened for the Minutemen with a second place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:36:81). Following the 400 medley relay, it was a battle to the very end for sophomore Justin Brooks as he took second in the 1000 free (10:00.10) while junior Brad Sloan posted fourth (10:15.19).

In the 200 free, redshirt senior Derek Castellana and freshman Drew Talarick swam to a second and third place finish respectively to earn points for UMass. UMass saw first place finishes from freshman Max Butler in the 200 IM (2:00.72) and senior Zack Priest in the 200 butterfly (1:58.45).

Junior Nate Bromage placed second in the 50 free (47.77) right behind teammate Juan Moliere. In a neck-and-neck battle to the finish, freshman Brian Schmidt claimed second place in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.60). In the final event, the UMass men's 400 freestyle relay teams captured first and second to finish strong.

The diving team took to the boards for the first time this season as senior Rueben Rappe picked up the win for the Minutemen in the one-meter dive (275.62) and took second in the three-meter dive (274.05). The men's diving squad also saw excellent performances from freshmen Adam Duffield and Zach Lichter who placed fourth and fifth respectively in both the one-meter dive and the three-meter dive.

Altogether, the Minutemen posted five first place finishes in today's individual events.

The women's action opened with second and third place finishes from the 400 medley relay teams. In the 200 free, junior Christa Narus finished second (1:56.86), sophomore Elizabeth Walsh took third (1:59.09), and sophomore Kathryne Chalikis placed fourth (2:00.44) to earn points for UMass.

Junior, Cecelia Jenkins would grab the only individual first place finish for the Minutewomen today in the 50 free (25.16). Following behind Jenkins to claim third place was senior Allison Volpe (25.33) and freshman Jennifer Corriveau (25.40).

The women's team tallied up a few more points in the final event of the day, the 400 freestyle relay, as they finished first, second, and third.

For the UMass women's divers, junior Karen Upperco placed second in both the one-meter and the three-meter dives. Junior Sarah Horstmann took fourth in the one-meter and third in the three-meter.

UMass will return to action next Friday at 2 p.m. to take on Stony Brook at the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. pool located in Boyden Gymnasium.
