AMHERST, Mass. - Mark DeSantis (Stoneham, Mass.) scored his first two goals on the season and the first two in his collegiate career in the 3-0 conference win over Dayton scoring in the 54th minute and the 63rd minute of the game. Ben Arikian (West Islip, N.Y.) added a third goal in the 80th minute to solidify the win for the Minutemen.
DeSantis' first goal of the game came with 36 minutes left on the clock in the second half. On a pass from Bryan Hogan (Lititz, Pa.), DeSantis sent a laser shot to the middle of the goal just out of the reach of the Daytin goalie, Zac Gibbens, for his first collegiate goal, and his first on the season. It was Hogan's first assist on the year.
Just under ten minutes later on a pass by Douglas Rappaport (Tucson, Ariz.), DeSantis dribbled beautifully around the Dayton defender and sent a shot to the left corner of the net for his second goal of the game, season and career.
In the 80th minute of the game, Arikian shocked the crowd, and both of the teams on the field by scoring from 35 yards out on the left side of the field on a ball that went untouched by all. Arikian's goal was also his first on the season, and in his collegiate career.
Dayton had plenty of chances in the first half to score, controlling most of the time, but were unable to capitalize on any of them. UMass' offense took over in the second half and their defense prevented Dayton from doing much as they only had 5 shots in the half compared to UMass' 13.
Zack Simmons was as remarkable as ever in goal adding to his career shutout record, now standing at 18, his fourth on the season.
UMass is now 6-4 on the season (1-0 Atlantic 10). They will take on another Atlantic 10 foe in Xavier on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Rudd Field.
