UMass Rowing Opens Fall Season At Textile River Regatta

Lowell, Mass. - The UMass women's rowing team opened the fall season at the Textile River Regatta in Lowell on Saturday, September 29, and won four different events. The novice eight, the open eight, the quad, and the lightweight single all won their races.

UMass won the novice eight with a time of 24:05.366. Simmons finished second and Worcester Polytechnic was third. The UMass "B" boat came in fourth in this event. The novice eight "A" boat included Dani Vollman, Alli DeMatteo, Chelsea Wakeham, Kelsey Schacter, Jen Coyne, Kelly Barrett, Elizabeth Euiler, Amy Nash, and coxswain Sam Schnoer. The "B" boat included Ellis Brewster, Stephanie Stark, Jennifer Dolan, Liz Tran, Teri O'Brien, Lauren Pineda, Rachel Speilberg, Elli Brazenall, and coxswain Molly Boggle.

UMass' open eight crossed the 3.25 mile course with a time of 22:52.764. Two boats from the Riverside Boat Club were second and third. The open eight inlcuded rowers Airlina Burrill, Sarah Marsan, Anna Kenseth, Jennifer Rivero, Sarah Albert, Amanda Mawn, Rachael Nealer, and Erin Kelly, along with coxswain Dana Pulda.

The UMass quad edged the Merrimack River Rowing Club by over 30 seconds. UMass won with a time of 24:20.357 to Merrimack's 24:54.690. UMass' quad consisted of Sarah Albert, Amanda Mawn, Airlina Burrill, and Samantha Smith.

Elizabeth Euiler won the lightweight single, beating a boat from the Riverside Club. Euiler's winning time was 27:42.814.

The lightweight four trailed only Community Rowing in its event. UMass crossed the line in 24:54.690. Community Rowing won with 24:24.936. The UMass boat included Allison Donzanti, Julie Markus, Amy Rayla, Sarah Potts, along with coxswain Melissa D'Amico.

Sarah Marsan was second in the open single to the Riverside Club. Marsan was nosed out by less than 10 seconds. Riverside won with a 27:18.517 to Marsan's 27:26. 394.

The lightweight eight also took silver, with the Community Rowing boat taking gold. C.R. won decisively with a time of 22:40.016 to 25:02.764. THe lightweight eight consisted of rowers Allison Donzanti, Julie Markus, Amy Rayla, Sarah Potts, Chelsea Finnegan, Stephanie Stark, Ellie Brazenall, and Jessica Romain. The coxswain was Molly Morgan.

UMass finished ninth in both the club eight and the open four. Simmons won the club eight and M.I.T. won the open four. The club eight featured Claire Champine, Samantha Smith, Anna Kenseth, Jennifer Rivero, Stacey Susienka, Emily Oleson, Chelsea Finnegan, and Jessica Romain, along with coxswain Molly Morgan. The open four consisted of rowers Claire Champine, Emily Oleson, Stephanie Susienka, Samantha Smith, and coxswain Erin Flaherty.

The Minutewomen will row again at The Head of the Housatonic in Derby, Conn. on Saturday, October 6.
