AMHERST, Mass. -- All fans are encouraged to wear pink to Friday night's women's basketball game against Saint Louis as the University of Massachusetts will be participating in "Think Pink," an initiative started by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to create awareness of breast cancer and support its coaches who are battling the disease. Pink ribbon pins will be available for those fans who wish to show their support in the fight against breast cancer. Both the UMass and Saint Louis coaching staffs as well as bench support staff will be joining coaches across the nation in wearing pink.

"I know very few people who have been untouched by cancer and particularly breast cancer," said UMass Head Coach Marnie Dacko. "One thing that I have learned over the years is that early detection has improved the outcome and that is something every woman can do for herself. It is my hope that through continued research, a cure will be found in my lifetime."

A representative from Baystate Cancer Research Center will be setting up a concourse table to hand out literature and educate people on breast cancer. We would also like to invite breast cancer survivors to take part in a "high-five line" during pregame introductions. Key facts will be incorporated into the video boards throughout the night.

"I am so pleased that UMass Athletics along with the UMass and Saint Louis women's basketball coaches have chosen to get involved in breast cancer awareness through the WBCA's THINK PINK weekend," said UMass Associate Athletic Director Tricia Turley. "My mother is a breast cancer survivor due to early detection and I'm happy we can contribute to providing further awareness on this issue."

The WBCA and University of Massachusetts will continue to build on this joint venture each year. More information will be available at www.umassathletics.com throughout the week or call the Athletic Marketing Office at (413) 545-1401.
