Storrs, Conn. - The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team (1-0) defeated the University of Connecticut, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon. The Minutewomen won two of the three doubles matches to take the doubles point. They then took three of the six singles matches to take home the win.
Co-captains Michele Spiess and Masha Pozar continue to be a dominant doubles pair as they shut-out Christine Burek and Kelley LoRusso. Freshmen Maude Lecluyse and Ellen de Jong teamed up to win No. 2 doubles 8-6. Sophomore transfer Laura Murillo and freshman Dasa Stanimirovic fell at No. 3, 8-2.
At No. 1 singles, last year's A-10 Performer of the Year Michele Spiess defeated Christine Burek, 6-1, 6-0. Junior Masha Pozar won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. At No. 3, Dasa Stanimirovic fell to Jessica Porter, 6-2, 6-1.
At No. 4 singles, Ellen de Jong fell in a highly competitive match. She lost in a third set tiebreaker 1-6, 6-4 (10-5). At No. 5, Maude Lecluyse was also defeated in a tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-4 (10-7). Sophomore Stephanie Gimenez won at No. 6, 6-1, 6-2.
The Minutewomen are now 14-24-1 against UConn all-time. They are next in action in three weeks as they participate in the Cornell Blind Duals on October 14.
