AMHERST, Mass. - No. 9 UMass scored on its first seven drives of the game on its way it a dominating 48-7 win over Stony Brook in the first-ever meeting between the teams. Senior captain Steve Baylark scored three touchdowns in the first half and finished with 96 rushing yards. UMass is now 3-1 heading into a bye week.

Baylark had his fourth career three-touchdown game and now has 35 career TDs, to fifth all-time at UMass in that category.

Rasheed Rancher had an 89-yard TD pass from Liam Coen, the second-longest pass play in UMass history.

Baylark had 96 yards rushing, including touchdown runs of 10 and 6 yards, and also caught a 16-yard scoring pass from Liam Coen all in the first half as the Minutemen (3-1) jumped to a 42-0 halftime lead.

Massachusetts also scored in the first half on an 11-yard run by J.J. Moore; a 3-yard fumble-recovery by Brandon Smith; and an 89-yard pass from Coen to Rasheed Rancher. That play was the second-longest pass play in UMass history. Coen was 6-of-8 for 177 yards.

Stony Brook (0-4) scored its only touchdown in the third quarter on a 5-yard fumble return by Leonard Wright. Josh Dudash was 15 of 28 for 148 yards for Stony Brook.

The Minutemen increased their lead to 45-7 on a 41-yard field goal by Chris Koepplin in the third quarter. Koepplin kicked a 48-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. That kicked was the longest by a UMass player since 1978 when Sandro Vitiello tied the school record with a 52-yarder.

Tony Nelson rushed for 73 yards on 12 carries for Massachusetts.

Notes

• Steve Baylark had three touchdowns and now has 35 in his career to stand alone in fifth place at UMass. He passed Adrian Zullo, who had 33 scores in his career. It is the fourth time Baylark has had a three-touchdown game. He scored on a 10-yard run and a 6-yard run, giving him 31 career rushing touchdowns. He also had a 16-yard TD catch in the second quarter.

• J.J. Moore's 59-yard punt return in the first quarter was the longest by a UMass player since Kory Blackwell had a 67-yard punt return against UConn on Nov. 16, 1996.

• Moore scored his first-career rushing touchdown with an 11-yard reverse in the first quarter.

• Brandon Smith scored his first-career touchdown on a 3-yard fumble return with 7:54 left in the first quarter.

• Rasheed Rancher hauled in an 89-yard touchdown pass from Liam Coen, the second-longest play in UMass history. The combo of Rancher and Coen hooked up for the third-longest play, an 84-yard pass against Delaware last season on Nov. 5, 2005. The school record is a 97-yard pass from Jeff Krohn to Jimmie Howard in 2003 vs. Villanova.
