No. 10 UMass Runs Over William & Mary, 48-7

AMHERST, Mass. - The No. 10 UMass football team ran all over William & Mary on the way to a 48-7 win before 15,822 at McGuirk Stadium on a perfect fall Saturday. Senior Steve Baylark racked up 187 yards and two TDs while freshman Tony Nelson added 69 yards and three scores. UMass rolled up an amazing 596 yards of total offense, the most since they had 599 against UConn in 1999.

The Minutemen move to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in the Atlantic 10. Tribe dropped its seventh conference game in a row and stands at 1-4 overall, 0-3 in the A-10.

Baylark and Nelson each scored twice in the first half as UMass found the end zone on its first four possessions of the game to build a comfortable 28-0 lead at the half. William & Mary suffered its largest margin of defeat in conference play since joining the A-10 in 1993.

Sophomore quarterback Liam Coen passed for 275 yards, completing 12 of 17 attempts, and a touchdown.

Junior Chris Koepplin's 30-yard field goal on the opening drive of the second half pushed the UMass lead to 31-0, and Coen's 29-yard touchdown pass to J.J. Moore with 5:45 remaining in the third extended the advantage to 38-0. Moore finished with 118 yards on five catches for the Minutemen, and Brandon London added 83 yards on three catches.

POSTGAME NOTES

 UMass piled up 596 yards of total offense. The school record is 651 set against New Hampshire in 1965. Recently, UMass has had these big offense days: 599 vs. UConn in 1999 and 591 vs. Buffalo in 1998.

 Steve Baylark scored his 32nd and 33rd career rushing touchdowns his 36th and 37th career overall touchdowns with 23-yard and 6-yard touchdown runs in the first quarter. He has scored at least one touchdown on 10 of the last 11 games. Over those 11 games, he has a total of 17 touchdowns (13 rushing and four receiving).

 Steve Baylark had his 18th career 100-yard game with 187 yards. UMass is 15-3 in those 18 games. He had 130 in the first-half alone. For Baylark, it was his third-most rushing yards in a game. His career-best is 198 at Maine in 2005 and 192 at UNH in 2004.

 He also moved to third in career rushing yards at UMass. He passed Garry Pearson (3,859) with his career-long 50-yard rush in the second quarter. Baylark ended the game with 3,927 yards. That 50-yard run was his longest in his career (of 865 career carries), surpassing his previous high of 49 at Northeastern 0n Nov. 6, 2004.

 Redshirt freshman Tony Nelson scored his first three career touchdowns on 4- and 5-yard rushes in the second quarter and a 2-yard score in the fourth quarter. He is the first UMass freshman to rush for three of more TDs in a game since R.J. Cobbs had a school-record trying five at Rhode Island in 2002. Nelson saw extended action with injuries to Tim Washington (back) and Matt Lawrence (hamstring). Nelson finished with 69 yards.

 J.J. Moore went over the 100-yard mark for the third time in his career with 118 yards on 5 catches. His last 100-yard game came at Colgate (9/10/05) when he had a career-high 128.

 Brandon London moved to fourth on UMass' career receptions list with 3 catches on Saturday, giving him 110 in his career. He passed Bob Simeone (1981-84), who had 108.

 London also moved to seventh on the career receiving yards list with 1,455 passing 2006 UMass Hall of Famer Steve Schubert (1970-72), who has 1,435 in his career. Next on the list is Tim Berra (1971-73), who had 1,486. Yes, his is Yogi Berra's son.

 Sophomore quarterback Liam Coen moved to sixth in career passing yards with 275 in the game on 12-of-17 passing and one TD. He now has 3,281. He passed former Detroit Lion and Baltimore Colt Greg Landry (1965-67), who had 3,131.

 The crowd of 15,822 was the 19th largest all-time at McGuirk Stadium, dating to the facility's opening in 1965.
