ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore Mike DeSantis (Stoneham, Mass.) scored late in the first half and sophomore Tony Bassett (San Francisco, Calif.) added a late insurance goal as the UMass men's soccer defeated Navy 2-0 in game one of the Anders Classic on Saturday. The game was postponed until today due to Tropical Storm Ernesto.
UMass is now 2-0-1 on the season and 6-0-3 over the last nine regular-season games dating back to last season. This is the second shutout for UMass this season and the sixth for keeper Zack Simmons (Durham, N.H.) in his career.
"This was a game we needed to win," said head coach Sam Koch. "It wasn't pretty by any means, but it feels just as good to get."
DeSantis scored with 10:26 remaining in the first half on a 30-yard blast after settling a pass from his brother, Mark. Mike's shot curved down and in with the strong wind blowing from behind the goal and slipped just past Navy keeper Evan Barnes who was in position to make the save.
Bassett scored just outside the top-left corner of the goalkeeper box after accepting a feed from sophomore Prince Ofosu (Worcester, Mass.). Bassett evaded his defender to place his shot into the right side of the goal.
"Both goals were great shots today," said Koch. "Mike's goal was just a fantastic blast that took a knuckle at the end and Tony's was on a nice move towards the goal.
Simmons made three saves on the day and was helped by the defensive back row of Brendon Ferullo (Northboro, Mass.), Chris Brown (Tucson, Ariz.), Kenny Cook (Fairport, N.Y.) and Trevor Singer (Phoenixville, Pa.) who consistently cleared away any Navy threats.
The Minutemen were efficient offensively today scoring both goals on just six shots. Navy attempted nine shots for the game. Each team took seven corner kicks.
UMass is now 3-1-0 all-time against the Midshipmen and have won the last three consecutive games by a 6-1 margin. The Minutemen have posted 2-0 shutouts against Navy in the last two meetings.
This is the best start for UMass since 1997 when the Minutemen opened the season 4-0-1.
The Minutemen will face UMBC tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
