AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts has announced the renewal of its football rivalry with the College of the Holy Cross. The teams will meet in a two-year home-and-home series beginning in 2007. The Minutemen will host the Crusaders on Sept. 1, 2007 at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. The following season, UMass will travel to Worcester for a Sept. 6, 2008 date at Holy Cross.
"We think it is tremendous to get Holy Cross back on our football schedule," said Athletic Director John McCutcheon. "This match-up is extremely positive for many different reasons. The history between two traditional programs, fan access and quality inter-conference play are just a few of the reasons this should prove to be a great series."
UMass and Holy Cross have played 46 previous games with the last coming in 1996, a 28-10 Minuteman win in Worcester on Sept. 14. In the series which began in 1897, Holy Cross leads, 21-20-5. The 1996 meeting concluded a seven-year run of meetings which began in 1990. Prior to that the teams played every season from 1970 through 1987.
The game finishes UMass' non-conference football schedule for 2007 as the Minutemen finish a four-year deal with Colgate, playing the Raiders on Sept. 8, 2007. The Minutemen will also play their annual game against a Division I-A team when they face Boston College on Sept. 29, 2007 in Chestnut Hill.
Tickets for UMass' 2006 season are now available by calling 1-866-UMASS-TIX. The Minutemen open the season on Sept. 2, 2006 when Colgate comes to Amherst.
