Amherst, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team held its annual end-of-season banquet on Friday night. Numerous awards were handed out, and next season's captains were announced. Four graduating seniors and assistant coach Celeste Frey were recognized for their contributions to the tennis program. Frey is leaving after five seasons as assistant coach.
Three individual awards were announced, as voted on by team members. The Most Improved Player Award went to freshman Lauren MacKay. As head coach Judy Dixon said, MacKay was an eager player all season, doing anything for the good of the team. She should receive more playing time next season.
The UMass Award, or Coaches Award is meant to go to a team member who best represents UMass tennis. This year, it went to two members, sophomore Masha Pozar and senior Lesley Fisher.
Michele Spiess was voted Team MVP for the second consecutive season. She won 24 singles matches for the second year in a row. Later in the night, she was also given her three end-of-season awards administered by the Atlantic 10: Player of the Year, All-Conference Team, and Academic All-Conference Team.
Two new captains were also announced. To-be Senior Michele Spiess will serve as co-captain with to-be junior Masha Pozar. But the night was devoted to the five people who will not be returning next season. Seniors Jana Bartoloni, Lesley Fisher, Dorothy Iwanowicz, and Susan Johnson were honored along with assistant coach Celeste Frey. Frey is leaving after five seasons at UMass. Over that time, she earned her masters in Sport Management and now is moving on to a tennis marketing position with White Plains in New York.
