RICHMOND, Va. -
Richmond (9-16, 3-3 Atlantic 10) scored early and often, posting runs in each of the first three innings, to down the Minutemen (3-13, 1-5 A-10) 10-5. The Spiders scored in five of their eight at bats, knocking 13 hits while drawing five walks. The Minutemen were able to stroke 12 hits of their own, as they had five players with multiple hits in the game. Leading the way for the Minutemen were sophomore Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.), who was 2-3 with a run scored and a RBI and freshman Adam Tempesta (Brockton, Mass.) who was 2-4 with two RBI.
Richmond scored three runs in the first, one in the second and three more in the third as it took a commanding 7-2 lead. The Spider scoring binge was led by a leadoff home run by Zack Zeskind, a two-RBI single by Hank Coogin in the first and a two-RBI double down the left line by Vince Riggi in the third. 12 Richmond batters reached base over the three-inning span, drilling nine hits, three of which went for extra bases. Coogan led all Richmond batters, going 3-5 with three RBI and a run scored.
The Minutemen picked up two runs in the top half of the third as freshman Jim Macdonald (Chresire, Conn.) singled and junior Travis Munsey (Durham, N.H.) was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. Both would come in to score thanks to a sacrifice fly by Franczek and a RBI single by Tempesta. Macdonald finished 2-4 with a run scored while Munsey was 1-3 with his third inning run.
UMass had a golden opportunity to get back in the game in the top half of the sixth. Trailing 7-2, the Minutemen loaded the bases with no outs in the inning. Spider reliever Jason Bolinsik was able to minimize the potential rally by retiring the heart of the Minuteman lineup--junior Bryan Adamski (South Deerfield, Mass.)--sophomore Bryan Garrity (Peabody, Mass.) and freshman Joe Cotone (Yorktown, N.Y.). UMass scored its lone run of the inning on a RBI ground out by Garrity, making it 7-3.
The Minutemen manufactured a run in both the eighth and ninth innings, but the Spiders scored one in the seventh and two in the eighth to keep a comfortable lead all the way through. Alex Hale went five innings for the Spiders, allowing three runs on five hits to pick up the win and improve to 3-1. Senior David Sullivan (Winchester, Mass.) tossed six innings allowing 10 hits and seven runs (five earned) to take the loss, falling to 0-4 on the year. The Minutemen return to action Tuesday afternoon as they travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Holy Cross. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Be sure to check back to www.umassathletics after the game for a complete recap and game stats.
