AMHERST, Mass. - UMass Women's Basketball Head Coach Marnie Dacko has announced that Debin Bell has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the program next season. Bell is a 5-10 swing player from John A. Logan College in Carferville, Ill. where she spent the last two seasons. Bell, who helped the Lady Vols to a 16-13 record this past season, will earn her Associates Degree next month.
"Debin fits in very well with my style of play," said Dacko. "She can score inside, while also being able to step away and be effective. I like the size and strength that Debin brings to our team. She is a battler and will raise the competitive level of our program."
Bell averaged 6.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.0 steals per game last year. In addition, she was a 71 percent free throw shooter.
A Skokie, Ill. native, Bell attended Evanston Towship High School. She played for Coach Steve Wool and was a McDonald's All-American nominee her senior season.
"Debin is a diamond in the rough and will fit in well with Coach Dacko's system," said John A. Logan Head Coach Marty Hawkins. Hawkins was the head coach at Loyola University at the same time Dacko was an assistant at Northwestern.
John A. Logan College is the alma mater of ReGina Banks, the wife of current UMass Men's Basketball Assistant Coach Steve Middleton. Banks is a member of the college's Hall of Fame.
Bell is the third student-athlete to sign a letter of intent for the 2006-07 season. Dacko already received letter of intent from Diatiema Hill (Queens, N.Y.) and Kim Benton (Springfield, Pa.) during the early signing period last November.
