BOSTON - Behind strong performances from senior James Godinho (Sandwich, Mass.) and junior Erik Hoagland (Suffield, Conn.), the men's track and field team finished 30th among 51 teams this past weekend at the IC4A Championships held at Boston University. In the women's ECAC Championship Meet, sophomore Christina DeRosa (Sound Beach, N.Y.) finished 15th in the 5,000 meters to lead the Minutewomen.
DeRosa and fellow sophomore Kristin Bakanowski (Northboro, Mass.) were the only two Minutewomen to compete on Saturday in the women's meet. Bakanowski failed to record a height in the pole vault. Last season, tied for 16th in the event after winning the New England Championship title.
DeRosa took 15th in the 5,000 meters with her time of 17:24.13 - a career-best time in the event.
On the men's side, Hoagland had the top finish of the weekend taking third in the long jump with a mark of 23-feet, 5.25 inches. That mark was also a career-best and ranks third all-time at UMass. Hoagland also competed in the triple jump where he placed 15th with a leap of 45-feet, 11.75 inches.
Godinho was the only other Minuteman to score points at the meet taking eighth in the 500 meters. He clocked a time of 1:04.17 in the event finals. In the prelims, Godinho nearly broke the school record in the event for the second time in his career. He turned in the third fastest time of the prelim round with a time of 1:03.41 - just 0.43 seconds off the school mark which he set last season.
Other notable performances for the men included sophomore Sean Calicchio (Brooklyn, N.Y.) in the shot put and senior Jon Korhonen in the mile. Calicchio finished 12th overall with his second-best throw of the season (51-feet, 9.75 inches), while Korhonen finished 17th in the mile (4:16.95).
Korhonen broke the UMass school record earlier this season and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships. His time of 4:04.25 at the Boston University Invitational has him ranked 47th nationally in the mile. Last season's NCAA mile field consisted of just 15 runners and Korhonen's time would have placed him eighth overall. This season, however, 13 runners nationally have recorded times under the four-minute barrier.
