BRONX, N.Y. - The Massachusetts Minutemen (2-7, 0-1 Atlantic 10) opened the 2006 A-10 season with a 11-5 loss to the Rams of Fordham (7-13, 1-0 Atlantic 10). The Rams scored six times in the bottom half of the eighth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate to pick up the victory. Junior Bryan Adamski (South Deerfield, Mass.) carried the Minutemen offense as he hit two home runs and drove in four to keep the Minutemen in the game. Fordham catcher John Molicone lead all Rams' batters as he was 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. The Minutemen wasted no time getting on the board scoring one run in the top half of the first. Sophomore Ryan Franczek (Chicopee, Mass.) stroked a one-out ground rule double to deep center field. Junior Lou Proietti (Hamilton, Ont.) followed with a single to left that brought Franczek in to score, giving the Minutemen an early 1-0 lead.

Fordham rallied in the bottom half of the second as Eric Reese was hit by a pitch by Minutemen starter junior Chris Lloyd (North Adams, Mass.). Reese was moved over to second on a single to right by Molicone. Lloyd struckout designated hitter Javier Martinez for the second out of the inning but issued a walk to Jordan Lert to load the bases. P.J. Como then followed with a single to center to score Reese and Molicone to give the Rams a 2-1 lead.

The Rams picked up another run in the bottom half of the fourth as Reese reached once again, this time on a base on balls. Molicone then followed with his second single of the game. Martinez sacrificed Reese to third and Molicone to second on a sacrifice bunt. Reese then came into score on a deep sacrifice fly to right field hit by Lert to give the Rams a 3-1 advantage.

UMass head coach Mike Stone lifted Lloyd after four innings. The right hander went four, allowing three runs on four hits. Stone then turned to surging freshmen Mike Dicato who hadn't allowed an earned run entering the afternoon. Dicato provided three innings of quality relief, allowing two earned runs on two hits while walking four batters, but took the loss falling to 0-1 on the year

The Minutemen got back in the game in the to the game in the top half of the sixth. Proietti singled off Ram starter Cory Riordan of to start the inning. Adamski followed with a blast to left field that cleared the fences for a home run. The homer was the first by a UMass batter this season and the fifth of Adamski's career. Riordan allowed a single to Jim Macdonald (Cheshire, Conn.), but was able to get out of the sixth without allowing another run. Riordan went six strong innings allowing three runs on five hits while striking out seven Minutemen.

The Rams reclaimed the lead during the bottom half of the seventh scoring two runs. UMass, however, responded quickly in the top half of the eighth as Adamski tied the game once again with one swing of the bat. Proietti drew a walk off of Fordham reliever Craig Tscherednikov. Adamski followed with his second home run of the game, slugging Tschrednikov's delivery deep into the left field bleachers to tie the game at 5-5.

Dicato came out to start the eighth but issued a walk to Como. Sophomore Brent Tarasuik was brought in to relieve Dicato. The following batter, Daniel Leach, reached on a fielder's choice and shortstop Rich Goulian drew a walk from Tarasuik to load the bases. Freshman Al Jardine (Neptune, N.J.) was brought in to face lefty slugger Greg Smith to initiate a lefty-lefty match up. Smith was able to single through the right side to score Como, giving the Rams a 6-5 lead. Fordham would score five more runs on two hits, a walk and an error for the final of 11-5. Fordham reliever James Sammut pitched two scoreless innings for the Rams to improve to 1-0.

Game two of this three game series takes place Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Minutemen will turn to junior Rory McDonald (East Longmeadow, Mass.) to even the squad to 1-1 in the Atlantic 10. Live stats from tomorrow's game can be found on the Fordham athletics website www.fordhamsports.com.
