Men's Track Takes Third At Rhode Island Mega Meet

KINGSTON, R.I. - Sean Calicchio, James Godinho and Jon Korhonen each recorded first-place finishes on Saturday at the Rhode Island Mega Meet to lead the Minutemen to a third-place showing among seven teams.
New Hampshire won the overall meet with 181 points, while Rhode Island took second with 174 points. The Minutemen captured third place with 141.50 points.
Calicchio won the shot put with a toss of 49-feet, 5.75 inches in his first meet of the season. He throw was just shy of an automatic IC4A qualification and was just under two feet short of his career-best throw.
Godinho won the 800 meters in 1:57.28 which was the fastest time in the event for UMass this season. It was also the first time this season that Godinho, primarily a 500 meter sprinter, had competed in the half mile race.
Korhonen picked up his second 3,000 meter win of the season on Saturday with his time of 8:33.20 - his fastest time of the season by nearly eight seconds.
Other top performers for UMass included Bryan Haynes who took third in both the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Ryan Corbett took second in the mile race, while Kevin Murphy took second in the 1,000 meters. Erik Hoagland took second in both the long jump and triple jump with near IC4A qualifying marks in each. Brandon London rounded out the top performers on the day with a second-place effort in the high jump with a season-best effort of 6-feet, five inches.
The Minutemen return to action next Saturday when they head to Boston University for the Valentine Invitational.
