AMHERST, Mass. - The Vermont Catamounts played spoiler on Tuesday night, handing the Minutemen (6-2-1, 4-2-0 Hockey East) their first home loss of the 2006-07 season. UVM (6-4-1, 4-1-1 HEA) got on the board with two goals in the second period by Torrey Mitchell en route to the win. UMass returns to the ice Saturday in Schenectady, N.Y. as they face the Union Dutchmen of the ECACHL.

The teams were dead-even in the first, each taking seven shots and were 0-for-2 on the power play. But the Catamounts struck in the middle stanza, the opening goal coming from Torrey Mitchell at 4:22. Dean Strong dumped the puck in the zone and Viktor Stalberg came out with it, making the pass to Mitchell at the crease. UVM opened up a two-goal lead at 12:55 with Mitchell's second of the game, this one on the power play. Mitchell's shot from the bottom of the near circle beat Quick high, and was assisted by Stalberg and Peter Lenes.

Through two, shots were 16-13 in favor of the visitors.

Neither team could generate much offense in the third, and UMass took a timeout with 1:22 remaining, pulling goalie Jon Quick in favor of the extra attacker. The Minutemen couldn't capitalize though, as Dean Strong added an empty net goal for the Catamounts to make it 3-0, putting the game out of reach.

Final shots were 27-15 in favor of UVM. Quick finished with 24 saves for the Minutemen, while Joe Fallon made 15 for the Catamounts.
