AMHERST, Mass. - Alli Lokey scored her fifth goal of the season 9:37 into overtime giving Temple (10-3, 1-0 A-10) a 2-1 overtime win over Massachusetts (3-9, 0-1 A-10) Friday afternoon at Garber Field in both teams' conference opener. Freshman Cher King (Christ Church, Barbados) scored the UMass goal and tied the game up with just 5:37 left in regulation. Both teams had nine shots and five penalty corners apiece. This marks the third straight game in the series that has gone to overtime and the seventh consecutive time that these two teams have played in a one-goal game.

The first half was very defensive as neither team had many scoring chances. UMass out-shot Temple 6-1 and took three of the four corners in the half. UMass had the first corner of the game about 10 minutes in. Freshman Cher King (Christ Church, Barbados) blasted a shot from the top of the circle that was blocked by a Temple defender.

The Owls nearly took a 1-0 lead three minutes later when Charise Young stole a pass deep in the UMass zone and broke in on UMass freshman goalkeeper Sarah Williams (Colorado Springs, Colo.). Williams came out of the net and make a sliding save, but the Owls were awarded a corner. A shot was taken from the top and went in the net, but was whistled off for being too high.

UMass then had a flurry late in the half that nearly resulted in a goal. With 4:14 left, UMass had its second corner. Junior Erin O'Brien (Annandale, Va.) took a shot from the top of the circle that was saved. King got the rebound right on the doorstep of Temple goalkeeper Erin Hanshue. King's shot was saved, but UMass was awarded its third corner of the half. On the ensuing corner, King tried a flick shot from the top that went just high. The last few minutes ticked away and the teams settled for a scoreless half.

Temple came out right away and took a 1-0 lead just 52 seconds into the start of the second half. Young dribbled down the left side and snuck a shot just inside the right post past Williams at a near-impossible angle. Temple took a 1-0 lead on just its second shot of the game.

Temple continued to frustrate the Minutewomen for the majority of the second half after taking the lead. Every time the Minutewomen got the ball anywhere near the circle, the Temple defenders were there to poke the ball away. Finally with 5:37 left in regulation, UMass was able to tie the game up after a wild flurry in front of the Temple cage. With Hanshue down, sophomore Katelyn Orlando (Manchester, Mass.) got control of the ball and found King on the far-side post. King quickly stuffed the ball into the cage and tied the game up at one. It was her third goal of the season.

Temple nearly ended the game in regulation. First, Mandi Ruth had a shot saved by Williams. Then the Owls were awarded a corner at the end of regulation. They did not get a shot off, but UMass committed a foul in the circle giving the Owls another corner opportunity. Alli Lokey got a shot off, but it went wide and the game went into overtime.

UMass had the first chance of overtime on a corner with 11:27 left. Sophomore Lauren Gillespie (Casco, Maine) took the shot, but it went wide left. Temple then got control of the ball and eventually netted the game-winner. The Owls were awarded a corner with 6:19 left. Alli Lokey took the shot from the top of the circle. It was saved by Williams, but the Owls were awarded another corner. This time, Lokey side-stepped to allow the crashing UMass defender to go by her and calmly shot the ball past Williams giving Temple the 2-1 win.

Williams finished the game with five saves for the Minutewomen while Hanshue had three for the Owls.

UMass will continue its season-long, eight-game homestand Sunday afternoon against Saint Joseph's. Game-time is set for 12:00 PM. Video and audio will be available free of charge via UMass All-Access at www.umassathletics.com. Live stats will also be available on Gametracker.
